need help Buying an xeon e3 1230v2
hello, due to some budget limitations i cannot afford to upgrade to a ddr4 dedicated cpu and a whole new motherboard and rams, all i want to do is upgrade my i5 3470.

i saw on ali express that the i7 3rd gen cost for almost 50$ but when searching the xeon equivalent for it (e3 1230 v2) only costs around 20$.

my question is that if i get an xeon e3 1230 do i need to modify some bios settings or it just plug and play like any other cpu's? thanks

Would help if you provided your motherboard model and other system specs. Run CPUz validation and post the link here and I'm sure someone will be able to help you.

The Xeon E3 1200v2 series is supported on the C204, C206, C216, H61 Express, H67 Express, and B75 Express chipsets.

Honestly not worth the upgrade imo.

i have a biostar H61MGP mobo
i5 3470, 16gb ddr3 ram and an rx570 4gb

i know it's not much of an upgrade but at least ill be able to play cs at nice fps along with some games i want to since an E3 1230 is much like an i7 3rd and that far better than what i have right now,i can sell the i5 3rd later if i can upgrade without needing to do any modification on my bios / motherboard
Go for it. Old Xeons are nice upgrades. You may also be able to find the same CPU for a similar price locally, Xeons often flood the market for cheap when they go EOL.

You probably won't have to do anything on your end. Just plug and play. The UEFI may reset its settings upon detecting the new CPU. If the system does not boot with the new CPU pull out the CMOS battery and reset the UEFI manually.
Check what make and model your board is and compare to the list below. Some like the ASUS Sabertooth z77 sell for like 300 USD on Amazon so you might want to look for cheaper options. I assume you already have ddr3 memory.

This 20 USD is way cheap. Do you have some sort of guarantee on it, like a 30 day return window?

just checked on my mobo website
it seems that it support xeons :D

tyyy , and btw im buying from aliexpress just like i did with my rx570 so it's a quite a gamble i can afford lol

sadly due to restrictions these cpu's goes quite pricey where i live to the point i can sell my current cpu locally for a higher or equivalent price than the cpu im buying lol
Question:
what are the differences between Xeon E3 V2 AND V3??
i dont want to ♥♥♥♥ it up lol
the v3 is for socket 1150, not 1155
its for the 4th/5th gen i series cpus
v2 is 1155 for 2nd/3rd gen i series cpu

its slightly more power hungry, and supports avx2 and fma3 instruction sets

v1, v2, v3, v4, v5 are different architectures

Look at that support list, I don't think that board supports the v2 Xeons, only the v1s (which strikes me as weird since it supports Core-branded Ivy Bridge CPUs). That makes things a little worse since you'd be sacrificing the admittedly somewhat slight intergenerational performance uplift you got going from Sandy Bridge to Ivy Bridge. I'm not sure even opting for an E3-1275 (essentially an i7-2600K performance wise) would completely overcome that. If you could find an i7 3770 for the right price then that's probably the one you want.
I don't see your specific Xeon on that board's cpu compatibility page you linked. Conversely, I don't see your board on the list of supported boards for that specific Xeon.

Can you find a model of cpu for your board that's similar in price?
Don't ever buy from AliExpress
It may work normally, good example are some of the Dell Optiplexes can run Xeons and they are not officially supported.

yes i was wrong it's not specified that the e3 1230 v2 is supported but im just opting now for a e3 1220 v2
but im worried since the website doesn't specify it's support that , maybe I'll just gamble on that
