Upgrade CPU for RTX 3070
So I got a 3070 for cheap (200€) and now I need to upgrade my CPU so it doesn't get bottlenecked.

I am currently considering 5800 or 5800X3D.

Also what mainboard to get?

Is the X3D worth it over the normal 5800X?

Thanks

Useless for 99% of the world. I don't understand why people keep recommending this place...
Probably to point it out for the people it might apply for? To maybe bring attention to something in case it does apply?

If that's not you, then it seems easier to ignore it instead of getting upset about it, no?
I read this thread and no one is mentioning it so I guess I need to: You should know how the 5800X3D processor works. It does not boost with AMD's PBO manual overclocking. It does not overclock. It runs at a fixed 4.5 Ghz max boost speed only forever and it can not be changed. Where as the Ryzen 5800X can use the PBO options and boost as much as 5000 - 5050 Mhz.

What this means: There are some games and some programs/apps that can use the extra cache in the 5800X3D for an increase in performance. But not all games or programs or apps will always use it. The 5800X3D is not a "universal performance upgrade" for all programs or games.

Yes in the games that do use it's extra cache it is significantly faster than the 5800X or any other AM4 processor. But in the games that do not use it's extra cache it is slower than the 5800X. That is a trade-off you have to cope with. Where as the 5800X is the same speed in all games and apps. Additionally the 5800X tuned with PBO is only +/- single digit performance % compared to the 5800X3D (even in games where the 5800X3D's cache is utilized).

In short: It's probably a better option to save a little money and go with a 5800X instead. I have one and I love it. It's fast enough for great performance with all modern games.

3200 cl14 ram is pretty good
it will be ok for the 5800x/x3d cpus

or you can keep it with the i7 for a htpc or other build

microcenter always has the best cpu/mobo combos, and sometimes good ram deals
they can price match amazon newegg and a few other stores
but gotta go there in person
Live in germany, no micro center here

Thank you somuch, sounds good.

And I can keep my RAM?`3200mhz CL14? or is it a bottleneck aswell?

I will play Cyberpunk: Phantom Liberty :x

The maximum the 5800X3D boosts to is simply lower, but the boosting behavior you're describing is otherwise there all the same.

I imagine no one mentioned the lack of overclocking because it's probably rather inconsequential to most people. Few people bother with overclocking on Ryzen to begin with. And no matter how much you overclock a 5800X, no, it's not going to match a 5800X3D in games on average. They're too far apart/you gain too little from overclocking on Ryzen to close that difference (let alone the massive 1% low uplifts). So for most people it's just an arbitrary fact that it can't overclock, especially because it can undervolt anyway, and unless you have bad luck (like me), you may gain some performance from that as it can allow it to hold an all core load boost that is closer to its maximum of 4.45 GHz to 4.55 GHz, as opposed to 4.2 GHz to 4.35 GHz like normal for those situations.

If you're wanting to suggest saving money, the 5700X is more the one to go for. It's the same thing as the 5800X but is 10% cheaper. That's more economical from a value perspective than not only the 5800X but the 5800X3D as well.

If you do have ram that is 3200 Mhz @ 14-14-14 then that is currently one of the best options for performance and price for any AM4 processor. You may get slightly faster performance with say a 3800 Mhz kit but you would have to get in to the realm of manually tuning each timing and it's time consuming and not for everyone. If you want something to just "Plug it in and load DOCP/XMP in bios and it will work without messing with it" and have really good performance then 3200 @ 14-14-14 is your option.

What do you currently have for...
Motherboard
CPU
RAM
PSU
MSI Z270 Gaming Pro Carbon
I7 7700K
G.Skill 16GB Cas 14 3200mhz
650 W Seasonic

Then you're prefectly fine for up to a RTX 3080 / 4070 Ti / AMD 7900 XT

What will help is 32GB of RAM and using all SSDs where OS & Games are concerned.

And using either Win10 64bit 22H2 or Win11 23H2
