So just unscrew that slot on the mobo where the ssd chip goes in to install it?

Yeah super easy to slot one in and use it as additional storage for your games if that is all you want to do. But If you do get one, I'd also recommend reinstalling your OS on it which may require you to do some changes to your UEFI/BIOS to make sure you are using UEFI boot without CSM.

I can't be asked to reinstall my OS and all the drivers and install all my backups lol. Takes about a day to do that.

Indeed lol. Completely understand. You'll still benefit using it for games which will benefit from fast loading from storage. Another (currently) side-note, You'll get the benefit of using it for Direct Storage with Windows 11 if you move your OS to it. AFAIK currently Direct Storage currently works on the drive the OS is installed on, but IIRC that is expected to change. Just something to keep in mind that when feasible/"less-inconvenient" it would be worth while to install the OS on the NVMe drive.
Also, here is the Digital Foundry Starfield PC review with the settings discussion.

Definitely try out configuring things similarly to their higher settings and see if that improves things for you. And get the DLSS mods as well since those should get you hitting a solid 60fps without changing anything else.

Yeah, windows 11 is a pain in the arse when reinstalling it. Microsoft need to do better when they release the next OS.
XMP is to match the RAM speed, if it says 3600 with correct CAS, then you are fine. My "XMP Profile 2" = 3200MHz at 14 CAS. And for my Ryzen 7 1800x I also need to set the SOC Voltage higher towards 1.25v instead of the defaulted 0.9v for the RAM to run properly.

My as well add this in here also that recent Windows updates have been resetting my RAM speed to the defaulted 1866MHz, subsequently turning off the XMP.

Once you select the XMP profile#
Double check the DRAM settings. Frequency should now reflect the correct speed. Then save and exit the BIOS. Then quickly re-enter the BIOS and see what all has now been applied for your DRAM settings and that those are all correct. Some Timing related settings might not get changed by the profile and for those that do not lock in # value should be set to AUTO.

Not sure if i installed the SSD correctly in the M.2 slot on the motherboard. It had two layers of thermal paste (1 on the motherboard and 1 on the heat sink) so I pealed both of them off since the SSD chip needs the temps to be normal.

Not sure if I ♥♥♥♥♥♥ anything up but the Asus motherboard manual book drawings and explanation was pretty trash lol.

Was pretty fiddly and annoying to do but I've done it right.

Nice. Now just have to use Disk Manager to create a partition/volume on it and format it and then add a new Steam Library to it so you can move your Starfield install to it.

Did you also check out the DF video and get one of the DLSS2 and DLSS3 mods?

Just for clarity, those mods don't "alter the gameplay" and simply make it possible to use DLSS instead of FSR as an upscaling option as DLSS is better in both performance and image quality. Especially the DLSS3 mods as this adds Frame Generation and will substantially improve your perceived frame rate.

If you just don't want to deal with mods at all, Bethesda has now said they are working on a fairly large post-launch patch that will also add DLSS so this should eventually become a native option without modding (at least the DLSS2 portion).
