Was the 3060ti a horrible mistake?
I'm currently in the middle of a buyer's regret panic spiral and I need some unbias input.

My beloved second-hand 1070 has been showing its age lately, it's getting to a point where it's just about passing the min specs for new titles. I doubt it would pass for Starfield.

So, I got a good deal - by Irish standards - on a new 3060ti and I'm wondering if I should've shelled out for the extra for the 3070 or something like a 4060ti as future-proofing.

My logic yesterday was that neither of those was a big enough step upward for the extra bucks for gaming at 1080p but now I'm seriously second-guessing myself.

So, as the title says, did my "impulse" buy of the 3060ti totally screw me? Should I have just kept the 1070 and waited for a 3070 (with reasonable Irish postage) to eventually appear on eBay? They're rare as hen's teeth.

hello,
i say that 8 gb are a lot. btw: nvidia know what their gfx baords shall be able to work out and i never had problems with 6 gb (gtx 1660 super) at high/medium quality/not ultra. at the moment, i play at HD-gaming (720P) with amd ryzen 5 4650 pro APU and i can play doom 2016 at medium quality. i could ask my mummy for more, but i tihink it is ok with apu. high end gaming is for people with more money. i paid 330€ for my pc. i simply dont want to spend thousands of euros for more and more games. i dont want to be offensive.

Well, tell that to the RTX 3070/3070 Ti owners whose cards are powerful enough to handle 1440P gaming, yet these cards are hampered by the 8GB VRAM, necessitating Low-Med setting, with RT, or High ingame graphics but no RT (games like Hogwarts, TLOU, etc, newer AAA games chew up a lot of VRAM)

Eh, big difference between APU and dGPU, where owners of the latter expect to be able to play games at higher refresh rate with good PQ at 1080P. OP has a GTX 1070, a good card in its heyday (circa 2016), and performed pretty well enough, but do remember that this was seven years back. Now, I'd say it's the era of 12GB (and higher) VRAM cards as some game eat up >8GB VRAM at 1080P, IIRC, there's even a game or two that requires >8GB VRAM for 1080P gaming (at high/max out setting)

Again, I stress that, for its time, the GTX 1070 8GB was sufficient since it's NOT that powerful a card, so it might not be able to max out many of the newer AAA games even at 1080P, but it's still pretty good for older games. The RTX 3060 Ti is a fair bit more powerful than the GTX 1070, but its performance is hampered by the 8GB VRAM.....that's just a fact.
If you don't care for ray tracing and dont mind AMD gpus then you should get 6800/6800X which have become really cheap lately and they have twice as much VRAM

3060 will still be relevant for a while, just like the 1070 can still run newer games at 60 fps if you tweak some settings.

I am actually about to buy a 3060 myself (non-ti version). it's just a good bang for buck. I'm upgrading from an rx480 which I've only recently run into newer games that it just can't run at all.

beware...the 12 gb version is some faster than the 8gb version...of the 3060 nvidia. ask google maybe.
3060 ti for $280 is a good deal.
