Was the 3060ti a horrible mistake?
I'm currently in the middle of a buyer's regret panic spiral and I need some unbias input.

My beloved second-hand 1070 has been showing its age lately, it's getting to a point where it's just about passing the min specs for new titles. I doubt it would pass for Starfield.

So, I got a good deal - by Irish standards - on a new 3060ti and I'm wondering if I should've shelled out for the extra for the 3070 or something like a 4060ti as future-proofing.

My logic yesterday was that neither of those was a big enough step upward for the extra bucks for gaming at 1080p but now I'm seriously second-guessing myself.

So, as the title says, did my "impulse" buy of the 3060ti totally screw me? Should I have just kept the 1070 and waited for a 3070 (with reasonable Irish postage) to eventually appear on eBay? They're rare as hen's teeth.

Don't worry, you went with a fine choice. You just didn't get a gain in the VRAM department.

That doesn't matter though because the 3060ti, 4060ti, 3070 are all about the same performance. They are literally within %10 of each other.

If I had to choose between the three I would choose the 3060ti also. The 3070 isn't really better but costs more. The 4060ti is a piece of junk that relies on AI.

Ok. I feel WAY better about it now. This has significantly reduced my panic levels. Thanks!

The last time I went on an impulse shopping spree, I ended up with a Fitbit and three "Rubix" speed cubes. The cubes at least were a great investment.

My feeling has always been that the point of upgrades is to improve performance. Will a 3060 ti out perform your 1070? Yep. Will it run games at 1080p for years? Yep. Would paying more for a higher end card get you more performance or a longer window of use before being obsolete? Sure. But that tends to be subjective as your preferences and income may change over time.

My advice is don't worry about it. You bought an upgrade to improve performance, mission accomplished. No matter what you do other people will have opinions that you should have done something else.

Also going from a 3060 ti to a 3070 isn't some sort of apples and oranges difference in performance. And by the time the 3060 ti is wholly outdated the 3070 isn't going to be in a much better position. By the time you want to upgrade from a 3060 ti, in an alternate universe you'd also want to upgrade from a 3070 too.
I would prefer the Titanium (Ti) version over the regular versions. I would have picked the 3060Ti over the 3070 any day.  :p

I have non-buyers remorse not getting the 3090Ti for $999.99. I think I may have even seen it as low as $799.99. Well, cheers, OP. You will enjoy that 3060Ti, nonetheless.

I would not have any buyer's remorse over this. Plus, NV is discontinuing the manufacture of this card to "force" people--hopefully to its 4xxx line which isn't doing very well right now.

Way more 3000 cards are on sale versus 4000 cards at Micro Center, for example. The price drop pertains to those.

So if you got a good deal, I would just enjoy it. From what I'm reading, the gains of mid range 4000 vs. same for 3000 doesn't justify the cost increase betw. the two gens.

i think the 3060 ti is perfect for fhd/ 1080p gaming...

I would suggest you stick to 1080P, perhaps high refresh rate gaming. 1440P might be problematic for some games as 8GB VRAM is just not enough these days. So, should you decide to go 1440P, the RTX 3060 Ti might be found wanting, especially IF the game requires >8GB VRAM.
The RTX 4060 Ti/RTX 3070 would have been worse choices, in my opinion. They are maybe up to 10% to 15% faster, cost more than an additional 10% to 15% more, and have the same bigger concern of 8 GB VRAM.

The RTX 3060 Ti has great performance. I wouldn't worry about performance. I would worry about the VRAM. It wouldn't have been my choice for that reason alone, but if you're not worried about VRAM and it's just the performance you're potentially worried about, then you chose the best of the three by far.

hello,
i say that 8 gb are a lot. btw: nvidia know what their gfx baords shall be able to work out and i never had problems with 6 gb (gtx 1660 super) at high/medium quality/not ultra. at the moment, i play at HD-gaming (720P) with amd ryzen 5 4650 pro APU and i can play doom 2016 at medium quality. i could ask my mummy for more, but i tihink it is ok with apu. high end gaming is for people with more money. i paid 330€ for my pc. i simply dont want to spend thousands of euros for more and more games. i dont want to be offensive.

If you only use your PC for RTS games, would you get a 3060 or a 3060 ti or a 4070
emoticorpse Jun 2, 2023 @ 2:01am
heh, even a 3070 or a 4060 ti would do nothing for future proofing. A 4090, sure maybe but those other cards? You would have been in the exact situation you're in now soon after.

Also, remember the money you didn't shell out is still in your pocket or you could consider that still untapped for ready investing in your next card. It all equals out.

I have to edit this again because I still stand by what I said because 3070 only had 8 GB vram? but I just ran into something saying there's a 3070 with 16 GB vram which In that case might be better but wasn't an option before. I don't pay much attention to new hardware so I don't even think that is an option now?

It still is if the software makers are actually competent. Too bad burnout is real in game development, and software development in general...

Especially worsened with QA teams get fired and the consumers become the QA, or they follow AGILE and do it the wrong way :steamhappy:
