Even 8Gb is plenty doable and just starting to be a problem at 1440p in some modern games and even in them games that can use more than 8GB of vram, the 8GB cards usually wouldn't be fast enough and you'd have to turn down something anyway.
NVIDIA is working on an AI method that will do much better real-time compression within VRAM so that you won't require as much physical VRAM for most of these games compared to normal. However I fear many game devs won't implement this (unless it's something NVIDIA can force via the GPU itself to do) and if this is not used by game devs, that many newer games might stop you from running a certain game at certain settings, based on what it detects for your physical GPU VRAM. So they definitely need to collaborate more and get this sorted out.
Jedi Survivor for instance needs at least 12GB for 1440P no FSR, unless you can alter the behavior yourself (requires ability to code).
Outside games like that, it's likely enough. Can't say that it is because you don't know what is down the pipeline for 2023. I do and it's not good. My LinkedIn getting spammed with keys for games that's a bad thing.
So, 20gb should be enough for next couple of years safely.
Even the specialist GPUs designed to cram in as much VRAM as possible for things like machine learning tend to cap out at 48 GB of VRAM (and said GPUs tend to cost around 5000 dollars at least).
No game !needs! more than 12 GB these days, and most of the advanced applications for it are beyond typical user needs.
To all AMD guys out there: AMDs texture compression is worse and AMD drivers also tend to allocate far more vram space than needed. Thats why youd see MUCH more vram allocation on your card than any nvidia card.
Keep in mind that allocation is not the same as actually used vram.
