But with Linux, if your system does get infected, it’s from extreme lack of care, because with the tools available for Linux and with how most distros are built, it’s more difficult to find a vulnerability to exploit unless the user creates one. An antivirus that can reach into the root of the OS is almost counterintuitive on Linux because that itself presents a potential back door for malware to reach the root.
If you’re connecting Linux and Windows systems at all on the network or locally, you definitely want some form of AV regardless.
Now there is less likely to be targeted for attack, or get infected via linux, but doesn't mean it remove the possibly getting attcked, or infected with a virus, it can happen, just like people shouldn't mindlessly install things on their system, same for linux as never know what can happen online, that why there always updates on all the OSs that got support, is to always play cat & mouse to try be ahead of those that trying to exploit the system remotely.
^This, as long we're able to make changes to software that means someone can code something for malicious reasons, doesn't matter if it popular, or not the fact remains someone will do it that the bottomline, and truth. Majority people that use PC do not have a single clue how most things works from coding software, to finding exploits, to even simple as modding a game, because they simply don't know how to do any of it really, let alone know how to review it really either, it's basically like expecting kids to know how cars are made, handle, and all that without them ever taking any course on being a mechanic, or electrician in their life. So most people just knows how to download, and install things that mostly it really, and lot of people mostly surf the web, videos, reading ebooks, news, online gaming, nothing fancy.
Once support and updates completely end for Windows 7 users then there will never be any possible way to detect any new viruses on Windows 7 ever again. And there will be no way to ever update, patch, or fix Windows 7 to detect new viruses either. After support ends then anyone still using Windows 7 could download a legitimate file from a legitimate website, get infected with a virus and not even know it. And worse: No way to clean it once infected either unless they format their entire computer and start over with a clean windows install.
And the worse part of that is some day it will end up like Windows XP is today where Microsoft will shut down the Windows Update servers eventually too. Which means after *THAT* happens then a clean install of Windows 7 won't even be able to download any of the existing security fixes either.
This is why even if Windows "Appears to be working fine" people should never continue using any older Windows OS on the internet after support and updates end. It's just too dangerous. And there's no possible way to make it safe again either.
When you made your steam account, you alr agree to follow their policy. Again.. the root of the problem is the drm. If tmrw steam decides to enforce online authentication everytime you wanna play games, they absolutely can do that and nothing you can do abt it.
The whole security issue thats being talked here very very rarely affects avg legacy os users
"I can't/don't get virus, I'm smart, or I never got one so I know what I'm doing, or I work in tech area at walmart/best buy so I guess that make me a IT with no understanding how software works" > *gets virus* > "HELP HELP I downloaded *shady app / pirated software / off from a friend/scammer, / site was hacked offer virus*, how do I remove virus, am I safe if I just use antivirus, or just fresh install" > Risen & repeat.
Sad truth this is a forever problem, always cat & mouse, no true way to stop every single thing out there, only to try avoid best we can, as long we want to use the internet lol.
Until you realize every single major 3rd antivirus still supports win7.
Heck.. even microsoft still offers support for much older os as long as you pay em
For now. All other companies and programs either have already ended Windows 7 support or will end it by next year. Anti-Virus companies will end it eventually too. They won't support Windows 7 forever. Just like how none of the AV companies will issue updates to anyone that runs Windows XP today they will end it for Windows 7 eventually too.
Windows 7 users should upgrade to Windows 10 soon while they are still safe at the moment, not waiting until the last moment when their OS is completely dead later.
Huh? Most av still updates their virus database for their winXP app. They just dont update the app anymore
Again... this has never been abt the os. This is literally abt drm
Also Windows 7, 8, and 8.1 ESU endedm there nothing to pay anymore because program been ended, anything offer by 3rd party updates are offering updates to things such as printers, or devices, not the OS itself. If don't want to take my word for it, then can take it from Microsoft themselves.

Even the antivirus themselves need updates to either fix the flaws to them if there exploits, or failure to detect things correctly which may be an oversight on their part, and if they dropped support it becomes pointless to having said anti virus when it can't detect, or stop new threats.
Important info for Windows XP users
Avast Free Antivirus still protects Windows XP owners with regular virus definition updates. But we no longer provide program updates, new features, bug fixes, or support for Windows XP. We strongly recommend upgrading to the latest version of Windows. (Remember, Microsoft ended its security updates for Windows XP back in 2014.)

Obviously you've never heard abt microsoft (paid) extended support. Heres an interesting news for you: the whole majority of ATM system out there still runs on winXP
https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/lifecycle/policies/fixed
Also since from your edit from the link added, I SUGGEST READ!!! Click on " Extended Security Update Program" that in box area for Security updates, it TELLS YOU THE EXACT SAME THING I TOLD YOU ABOUT.
https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/lifecycle/faq/extended-security-updates
The Extended Support under the Fixed Lifecycle program for Windows 7 ended on January 10'th, 2023. See here: https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/lifecycle/products/windows-7
Both of these OS's are no longer able to receive any updates from Microsoft, even under the paid support / AKA "Fixed Lifecycle" program you just linked us to.
And? What are you trying to say here? The same av program still works and gets constant virus database update. Does the new app skin matter to you? I thought we're talking abt security
And this is just winxp, not the newer ones. Thatll make this conversation even more funny
