Windows 7 support ends?? wtf??
My gaming pc still runs windows 7.. this was a willfull chooise.. as windows 10 does not support many of the games I like to run.

I just read steam will stop supporting windows 7 Big red banner..
what exactly does that mean?

-can I still install/play my games just not recieve any updates??
-can I still reinstal the last working version of steam for windows 7 after this date?
-can I still install/reinstal my games under windows 7 after this date?
-can I still play my library under windows 7 after this date?

**installing every game in my library and play in offline mode only.. is ofcourse possible..
would likely need to buy a much larger m.2 for that though+an external drive for a backup.
-Or does even the offline launcher no longer work after this date?

Is this a FORCED update to windows 10?? rendering twothirds of my games unplayable?
**upgrading to windows 11 is out of the question, hardware not new enough
**installing my entire library will be very costly.

WTF steam WTF..

please give me more info..

-can I somehow like I still use windows 7.. keep using my games on steam under windows 7 after the deadline on this scary red banner hits?

Users concerned with security should be looking at Linux instead of Windows
There are viruses that have infected Linux in the past too by the way. Linux is no more or less secure than windows in reality.
It’s nothing compared to security on Windows because Linux is hardly targeted, basically the same story with MacOS.

But with Linux, if your system does get infected, it’s from extreme lack of care, because with the tools available for Linux and with how most distros are built, it’s more difficult to find a vulnerability to exploit unless the user creates one. An antivirus that can reach into the root of the OS is almost counterintuitive on Linux because that itself presents a potential back door for malware to reach the root.

If you’re connecting Linux and Windows systems at all on the network or locally, you definitely want some form of AV regardless.

Also with Windows 10: Everyone runs as a user level (not Administrator account, AKA root). It's literally the exact same thing. Windows and Linux are just as secure (or not secure) as each other. It really doesn't matter which one we use. Also with Linux: Using older versions where security updates and support ended is just as bad just as using old versions of Windows too.
Dr.Shadowds 🐉 2023 年 8 月 9 日 下午 5:48
Windows isn’t very secure even when supported, you can only imagine how bad it can get when it’s unsupported.

The worst part is that enterprises still use older operating systems so hackers do have something to gain by infecting older systems.

Users concerned with security should be looking at Linux instead of Windows
Correct the sad truth when support is loss, there the growing danager that attackers will look for exploits, even if most people left doesn't mean jack crap they wouldn't do it, they will do it that the truth, if it makes it easier to attack people using out date browser, or unsupported OS they will do it, and nothing can do if get infected, as it be too late, as likely scammer already got control, and recording the things you have, or just encrypt your drive, locking you out of all your files.

Now there is less likely to be targeted for attack, or get infected via linux, but doesn't mean it remove the possibly getting attcked, or infected with a virus, it can happen, just like people shouldn't mindlessly install things on their system, same for linux as never know what can happen online, that why there always updates on all the OSs that got support, is to always play cat & mouse to try be ahead of those that trying to exploit the system remotely.

^This, as long we're able to make changes to software that means someone can code something for malicious reasons, doesn't matter if it popular, or not the fact remains someone will do it that the bottomline, and truth. Majority people that use PC do not have a single clue how most things works from coding software, to finding exploits, to even simple as modding a game, because they simply don't know how to do any of it really, let alone know how to review it really either, it's basically like expecting kids to know how cars are made, handle, and all that without them ever taking any course on being a mechanic, or electrician in their life. So most people just knows how to download, and install things that mostly it really, and lot of people mostly surf the web, videos, reading ebooks, news, online gaming, nothing fancy.

This right here is a big part of the problem of what I've been trying to say and to convey to all the people here in the steam forums that want to continue using Windows 7: There are people out there in the world commonly referred to as "Bad Actors" that will try to create a new virus just to see if it works with no specific goal in mind. Some of them even tell their virus to target "All windows users" from Windows XP through Windows 11. This is a problem because the majority of people using Microsoft Windows will download something off the internet, install it, click-through, and then go use it. After both the security updates from Microsoft and the 3rd party Anti-Virus programs both end issuing updates for Windows 7 then there will be no way at all to ever detect any new viruses from anything downloaded on the internet in Windows 7. Sure you can avoid "dodgy websites" but what if someone hacks a trustworthy website and infects their downloads? It happened to MSI's servers earlier this year. Malware and viruses were embedded in every executable download file from their download servers. Like the drivers and software for user motherboards? Those had viruses in them. Direct from MSI's own website thanks to hackers. Sure they patched it later and fixed it but in the short term a lot of people were infected.

Once support and updates completely end for Windows 7 users then there will never be any possible way to detect any new viruses on Windows 7 ever again. And there will be no way to ever update, patch, or fix Windows 7 to detect new viruses either. After support ends then anyone still using Windows 7 could download a legitimate file from a legitimate website, get infected with a virus and not even know it. And worse: No way to clean it once infected either unless they format their entire computer and start over with a clean windows install.

And the worse part of that is some day it will end up like Windows XP is today where Microsoft will shut down the Windows Update servers eventually too. Which means after *THAT* happens then a clean install of Windows 7 won't even be able to download any of the existing security fixes either.

This is why even if Windows "Appears to be working fine" people should never continue using any older Windows OS on the internet after support and updates end. It's just too dangerous. And there's no possible way to make it safe again either.

Let's say I switch to Win10. I don't know how to manage or customize a Win10 OS. That means I'll need to buy books and read tutorials. Spend countless hours figuring out all the flaws, and plugging all the holes. Years of trial and error. Monitoring my OS's various systems and data transfers. Making sure that nothing is happening that I don't want to happen. AND that I know the exact moment when that's not happening and from where. Then finding a way to stop that from happening without damaging my computer's ability to run certain programs.

That is nothing but work. And for what? To run games on a computer that already runs them. To run games that, if purchased on disk, would work fine. But don't. Due SOLELY to a policy change with a game store/launcher.

Why are you angry? You say this impacts you in no way. Then why are you in this thread?

When you made your steam account, you alr agree to follow their policy. Again.. the root of the problem is the drm. If tmrw steam decides to enforce online authentication everytime you wanna play games, they absolutely can do that and nothing you can do abt it.

The whole security issue thats being talked here very very rarely affects avg legacy os users

Agreed, and all that is just fallen on deaf ears for those too stubborn for their own good, then they expect someone to pity them after something does goes wrong for them, it's a pretty funny everytime I seen it countless times.

"I can't/don't get virus, I'm smart, or I never got one so I know what I'm doing, or I work in tech area at walmart/best buy so I guess that make me a IT with no understanding how software works" > *gets virus* > "HELP HELP I downloaded *shady app / pirated software / off from a friend/scammer, / site was hacked offer virus*, how do I remove virus, am I safe if I just use antivirus, or just fresh install" > Risen & repeat.

Sad truth this is a forever problem, always cat & mouse, no true way to stop every single thing out there, only to try avoid best we can, as long we want to use the internet lol.

Until you realize every single major 3rd antivirus still supports win7. :steamfacepalm:

Heck.. even microsoft still offers support for much older os as long as you pay em

This is not true at all. And attempting to downplay or otherwise speak less of the security risk of using an older OS is very bad to the point of you are trying to spread misinformation on purpose just from that comment.

For now. All other companies and programs either have already ended Windows 7 support or will end it by next year. Anti-Virus companies will end it eventually too. They won't support Windows 7 forever. Just like how none of the AV companies will issue updates to anyone that runs Windows XP today they will end it for Windows 7 eventually too.

Windows 7 users should upgrade to Windows 10 soon while they are still safe at the moment, not waiting until the last moment when their OS is completely dead later.

You do realize there no life time support by 3rd party antivirus with updates right?

Also Windows 7, 8, and 8.1 ESU endedm there nothing to pay anymore because program been ended, anything offer by 3rd party updates are offering updates to things such as printers, or devices, not the OS itself. If don't want to take my word for it, then can take it from Microsoft themselves.

What are the coverage dates for the three Windows 7 ESU SKUs?
Windows 7 Extended Security Updates 2020: January 14, 2020 - January 12, 2021
Windows 7 Extended Security Updates 2021: January 13, 2021 - January 11, 2022

Even the antivirus themselves need updates to either fix the flaws to them if there exploits, or failure to detect things correctly which may be an oversight on their part, and if they dropped support it becomes pointless to having said anti virus when it can't detect, or stop new threats.

Important info for Windows XP users

Avast Free Antivirus still protects Windows XP owners with regular virus definition updates. But we no longer provide program updates, new features, bug fixes, or support for Windows XP. We strongly recommend upgrading to the latest version of Windows. (Remember, Microsoft ended its security updates for Windows XP back in 2014.)

Obviously you've never heard abt microsoft (paid) extended support. Heres an interesting news for you: the whole majority of ATM system out there still runs on winXP

Clearly reading must be a challenge, because you would've realize what you just said in both about the Avest anti virus that clearly tells you what the problem is, and their warning, as well the problem ignoring how I just pointed exactly to what I just said, the program for paid service has ended, it is done since January, there no EXTENDEDING PAID SERVICE ANYMORE, hence no more updates, if you're still in that deep denial, call Microsoft, and ask to get on their paid service they will tell you flat out it has already ended because there no new contract to extend the paid program anymore.

Also since from your edit from the link added, I SUGGEST READ!!! Click on " Extended Security Update Program" that in box area for Security updates, it TELLS YOU THE EXACT SAME THING I TOLD YOU ABOUT.

The Extended Support under the Fixed Lifecycle program for Windows XP ended on April 8'th, 2014. See here: https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/lifecycle/products/windows-xp

The Extended Support under the Fixed Lifecycle program for Windows 7 ended on January 10'th, 2023. See here: https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/lifecycle/products/windows-7

Both of these OS's are no longer able to receive any updates from Microsoft, even under the paid support / AKA "Fixed Lifecycle" program you just linked us to.

And this is just winxp, not the newer ones. Thatll make this conversation even more funny
