Generic USB Controller not detected by Steam

Hi everyone,

I have a USB 'fightstick' that works fine on say 3 Windows machines. It does not need any custom drivers; it's just plug & play (until today).

However, I have a new Windows 11 PC. When I plug in the controller, the OS sees the USB controller as a USB Gamepad (I can bring up the Windows native USB gamepad test/configuraton tool -- so the OS sees it). But Steam's controller settings never sees this device.

I have an ancient Playstation 3 controller; hooked that up, and Steam saw it right away.

I've tried putting the controller in every USB port on the PC. Nothing helps.

At this point I think it's some obscure permissions issue (Steam can't have access or see this USB controller as a XInput or DirectInput controller -- that's my guess at least).

Any thoughts?

check joy.cpl

and

steam -> settings -> controllers -> [general]

if it shows in joy.cpl, but not steam

get the usb vid/pid, and post that
and maybe a link to buy the controller, so it can be added

Yes joy.cpl sees the USB device; I can use the test tab and see all the buttons work as expected.

But, Steam does not see it.

I also don't know what pid/vid is -- happy to get it, but a clue as to how to find it would be great. Thank you!

device manager, find the controller, properties, details tab, hardware ids
will have pid/vid listed

pic one, ctrl + a and ctrl + c to copy them

By the way, the driver Windows selected is from 2006. This is a very standard, boring USB device.

I'm not using Steam Link though. I don't get why I would post there... Care to explain it to me like I'm 5?

the mod in the link forum also adds them to steam client
hes around more often than the useful mods here
