Buying an M.2 NVMe.

I am finally going to get an SSD and will use the empty M.2 slot on my motherboard. It'll handle PCI 3x4 as well. So I am looking at the Adata/XPG Gammix S11, PNY XLR8, and Silicon Power. All 1tb models. Any thoughts?

Look at Intel 660p, ADATA XPG, and maybe Samsung if you're willing to spend a bit more (for marginal to no gain.)

I don't have enough knowledge of other NVMes to recommend them.

Just remember, the gains from one drive to another will be almost imperceptable, unless you get a drive without a DRAM cache, you may see a difference in rated speed, but that's only when you're copying single files, if you're gaming, you WON'T see an difference.
So just buy the biggest, cheapest, most reliable drive you can.

I'm wondering about the advertised speed differences. 2400/2000 for the WD and 3500/3000 for the XPG.

Doubt you even notice the difference, plenty good for gaming and everyday use.

but if you do use it to trans-code or copy/edit videos it will be very noticeable

Dont fuss about it. Get whatever is biggest capacity and cheapest, maybe look at endurance rating but thats it.

I personaly dont see a difference between nvme and normal sata ssds.

so in this case just get any one of them u will see big difference u will never go back to ssd any more

From my experience, you gotta watch it.

I bought 1 myself, & had to have it returned, due to it not being what I thought I was buying.
Or I think what happened was, I didn't buy it, because what I thought I wanted, wasn't what
I actually wanted.

It was like the NVMe was not an M.2, or something.

Turns out? There are different types, & if you get the wrong type,
it won't work with what your trying to do with it & your Motherboard...

Now that i'm aware of what to look for, i'll have better luck if I decide to take another leap
at this in the future for myself. So good luck with your Purchase.

I have one of their 256gb 2.5" SSDs in a Playstation 2 I modded up a couple weeks ago.

And Seagate and WD have been around since the 70s. So SP is still pretty young.

I'll probably go with the PNY model. I am considering lower capacities though until costs come down even further. So I am trying to figure out exactly what would benefit from being installed on an SSD. The operating system and basic applications? Sure. At present, my OS, user folders, program folders, etc are on a 256gb partition of my 2tb HDD. I may just opt to replace that single partition for the time being.

Recommend you put OS, applications, and games on SSD, and other things on HDD where load times don't matter as much (photos, music, etc.)

right, but there's not a whole lot of games i play lately where load times are important either. If I play something PVP, match doesn't start till everyones ready anyway, but mostly I play more retro stuff. Not a lot of big single player stuff anymore.
