Anyone ever used a laptop with a AMD Ryzen 7 7840HS?

Got my eye on a laptop I'd like to get but it has an AMD processor instead of an Intel. I've never used AMD at all are these good CPU's? I have heard AMD is better for when you're on battery as they require less power but I assume that also means they dont perform as well as an Intel CPU?

Theres no reviews currently of the laptop I want so its hard to see what its like

AMD CPUs are more than fine. I've been using a couple of them for the last three years after being with Intel for so long before that. Other than a motherboard hiccup and eventually a discovered fault with said motherboard, it's been just as uneventful as my previous Intel platform was. Not to say there weren't issues (there definitely were), but none really affected me, and Intel has had issues in that time too. I just go where the performance and price/performance both most match what I'm looking for. That was Intel before, it became AMD last time.

I am more familiar with AMD on the desktop side of things, but to my understanding they are especially competitive in the mobile space right now with their latest couple of generations (despite Intel outselling them there).

In Intel terms, that CPU seems most matched by the 12800H or 13700H, if it gives you an idea. So I would look up alternatives with those two CPUs and price compare them and then go with whatever seems better in those terms.

No, Less power use does not linearly equal less performance because performance per watt is not always equal. Efficiency seems to favor AMD between that CPU and the comparable Core i7s.

Just compare to whatever is the latest Mobile Intel i7. If it can hold up with that then it's good enough for Pro work apps and demanding games.

Be sure to have at least 1-2x SDDs and about 16-32GB of RAM along with at least RTX 3070 or better GPU

More than good enough. Superior even. That's a newer chip too (Which would explain the lack of reviews.), supporting DDR5 and LPDDR5. 8 cores at 16 threads. 3.8 Ghz base clock with up to 5.1 Ghz boost clock. 35-54 watt TDP and a 4nm process die. If that laptop doesn't have a dedicated graphics card, the iGPU in there is a Radeon 780m which can absolutely game. It's based on the newest NAVI 3 GPUs which are the same as in the newest high end AMD Radeon 7000 series desktop GPUs. It's actually faster than the most popular and common GPU in desktop computers, the GTX 1650 by about 12%. It's comparable in performance to the desktop AMD GPU, Radeon RX 570.

Intel iGPUs are better than the embarrassment they used to be, but AMD still has the edge on integrated graphics. There's an AMD APU (CPU/GPU combined) in the Steam Deck, the ROG Ally, the Xbox Series X, and the Playstation 5.

The laptop I'm looking at has a 4070 with the said processor. I guess looking at it either way the CPU is a def upgrade from what I have now. I recently bought a laptop with a 4080 and an i7-13700hx but to be honest its not worth the price point in my opinion so I returned it. The laptop is warm even when sitting idle and I dont play games as much as I used to, also the fans were very loud. I think a 4070 laptop that I can use to make music and work from home is the reasonable option for me when I look at the prices.

Awesome. That CPU with a 4070 will be a beast of a gaming machine, and when you're not gaming the CPU and iGPU alone will run things cool, fast, and efficient. (For a laptop anyway.)

AMD is much more reliable and has better support. Especially with Linux.

I have noticed on Youtube videos that the 4070 is providing the same performance as a 3070ti but at cooler temps and lower wattage which is nice to see. But doesnt that mean they're kinda leaving performance on the table not being used. Like if it can provide the same as a 3070ti laptop at lower wattage then they should maybe up the power a little.

But Im looking forward to this new laptop
