Steam client unusable on Windows 11 but worked perfectly on windows 10...
So as title says. Updated my laptop to Windows 11, and steam refuses to work unless I enable compatibility mode and set it to Windows 7, but then Remote Play which I used on this laptop perfectly on windows 10, does not work. If compatibility is disabled, the steam client launches, but the buttons on the window title bar (settings, view etc) as well as the tray icon are unresponsive, the rest of the launcher does react to clicks but in general is glitching not loading or if it does its very VERY slow. It worked perfectly fine on Windows 10 including remote play...

The specs:
Lenovo Thinkpad T420
i5-2520M 2.5Ghz
16GB DDR3 Ram
Intel HD 3000
Windows 11 Pro
Version 22H2
Build: 22621.1194

I wonder if it's due to your hardware not being compatible with Windows 11. Did you deploy any workarounds to get it to install on incompatible hardware?

Just wondering.

Edit: your graphics are tied to your processor which is not supported. That's what stood out to me. If you turn off Hardware Acceleration in Steam settings, what happens?

I highly doubt thats the issue. The reason why this cpu is not supported by microsoft is because it only has TPM 1.0 and 11 requires 2.0 which is a security feature and has nothing to do with hardware acceleration, as well as DX12, the intel hd only supports DX11 however, the steam client it self is not a directx application. Nor is remote play which is a H264 stream that needs hardware decoding support only, which the intel hd 3000 does support and it did work flawless on windows 10 previously, even after the steam launcher was overhauled. And the way its acting up it feels like its a software issue not hardware. I was just hoping someone else had this issue, considering many people still use old hardware on windows 11. I think Im gonna try to mess around with drivers, as I dont know what drivers got installed when windows did the upgrade.

Nevermind.... As suspected, something f- stupid was the issue.... Windows scaling... I had to set the scaling to 125% and then back to 100% and it fixed everything... Typical. I assume it doesnt like that I plug and unplug an additional display regularly, and probably it got bugged. Amazing

Good you found the issue. Maybe someone else will benefit from it.

The laptop is question isn't even good enough for Win10. And what would you run on Steam anyways given your terribly outdated GPU

It's time to retire tbat laptop or wipe it out and install Linux on it.

why would you bump a thread to not only post misinformation, but try bashing the persons laptop for no literal reason....

first off, not only did the OP say that the laptop previously ran win 10 and it ran fine, but i have laptops of that era and older and they run win 10 and win 11 perfectly fine, likely a bit faster than previously.

im sure plenty others here in steam have old or older pc's/laptops also running 10 or 11, not including all of the internet showing people installing and running said OS's on all these older pc's/laptops.

its not time to retire the OP's laptop, the OP can do as they please with their property.

With that Intel GPU and no dedicated GPU, wtf are you going to be able to run on Steam. That's all I was saying.

Overall Intel dropped driver support for HD 3000 long ago so while it might "run" Win10, it's never going to run it well enough.

It clearly is too old for Win11 so IDK why he even trying. Just go put Linux on it and enjoy it for what it is. A low end school/work laptop. Shouldn't even have Steam on it.

Do a fresh & clean W11 install, of course drivers and software are different after a "upgrade"..

You can also try to repair Steam Client or re-install the Steam Client...

Repair the Steam Service
https://help.steampowered.com/en/faqs/view/22C0-03D0-AE4B-04E8#repair

... Please try repairing the Steam service: 1. Exit Steam. 2. Click Start > Run (Windows Key + R). 3. Type the following command: "C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\bin\SteamService.exe" /repair 4. Launch Steam and test the issue again. Note: This command requires administrator privileges and may take a few minutes. If you have installed Steam to another path, please replace C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam with the correct path.

Good luck and have fun!

Later you can even setup a PIN in Windows Options without being online/Microsoft account

CAN YOU READ!
It's too old for STEAM.
There is nothing on Steam you going to be able to run on those low specs. Maybe indie 2d games like Stardew Valley and alike, that's about it. It's basically a paper weight besides using fot extreme basics. It's something you give a senor to do their Facebook and YouTube

You don't meet requirements but that shouldn't matter. For example, I have a core 2 duo E8400 with windows 11 on it and no issues are observed.

You probably didn't install the same drivers as before. Particularly your hd3000 graphic driver. Now that I think of it, on my core 2 duo I'm using a gtx 1050. That may be why, the 3000 graphics don't support proper directx hardware acceleration.

That's what I thought but OP claimed they fixed it by adjusting the zoom or whatever.

YES I CAN READ!

your opinion on the matter doesnt matter, the OP can do as they please with their property and they can play on steam if they want and they have tons of games to play.

that being said, the OP came here to get help with their issue(s), not to hear someone hijack their thread telling them to throw away their property because you say so.
