Is a 5 button mouse even adequate anymore?
Looking at some more modern FPS games, I notice they're adding all sorts of different functions to them now. The problem is, most developers do not use any kind of context sensitivity, and just slap controls wherever they find a key that isn't already mapped. You end up with controls that should be in somewhat close reach on the other end of the keyboard. And short of playing with a controller, that uses things like context sensitivity and menus so you have all controls at your fingertips, it seems mapping more to the mouse is the only way to go.

My current mouse is a 5-button gaming mouse. It has left, right, middle clicks, scroll wheel up and down, a button under the scroll wheel (remapped DPI switch) and two side buttons. But Trying to play Call of Duty: Warzone as an example, this is inadequate without important things still finding themselves mapped to the other end of the keyboard.

I am considering buying an MMO mouse. There are a few with PWM3360 sensors which are precise enough for any FPS gaming, albeit they will be a bit heavier than my G305. Perhaps the tradeoff for more buttons is worth it?

Depends how you play i guess, in fps i have weapon controls on mouse such as change, reload, sights melee etc, I have 17 buttons on mouse and don't use half of them. But i also have a controller on my left that has many buttons, scroll wheel etc too. each to his own as the saying is.

but if you use less than half of your 17 buttons, that's still like 8 to my 5, and 5 is the "standard" for FPS mice

Well most games allow you to remap keys, so what do you care how things are mapped by default?

It's all down to personal preference. The wife has a five button mouse and refuses to use the thumb buttons, so she's only using three. And seems to survive well enough.

If you need more buttons get a new mouse. You might also think about mapping your controls to ESDF instead of WASD to give yourself a access to more keys as an alternate.

I prefer them and always have ever since Microsoft IntelliMouse first released. I for one can't stand the feel of an MMO mouse and find very little need to have that many buttons since it's basically all pressed by your thumb anyways.

I prefer to use a combo like Logitech G13 + Logitech G502 or G903

normally, i use a PS3 move navigation controller in my left hand.. its a wii nunchuck looking thing, with a thumbstick, L3 button, L1, left trigger, d-pad, and X and O.. then a mouse in the right.. i usually end up mapping combat specific stuff to the mouse, spring, crouch, on the controller, and sometimes double functions if necessary.. you know, tap one button to do one thing, hold it to do another

But that's only going to work in "some" games. Games where you basically need all the keyboard keys it's not going to be doable. Like many RTS or MMO games, or something like Arma2/3/Dayz for example

Back in the day I got a Belkin Nostromo speedpad to address similar issues, was great for RPGs when they did not have a lot of multi-button mice at reasonable prices. Had a couple of cool features like the dpad and scroll wheel...

A game where you need 100+ keys is called a bad game

I use Logitech wireless G903 it is ambidextrous so has 2 buttons left and right, which after getting use 2 are very usable, it also has 2 dpi buttons u can map if you like although these are a bit trickier to use, the best bit in my opinion however is the ability to map the scroll wheel as a button if you knock it left or right you have to map it as a keyboard key i use like 9 and 0 and works great , i use these for grenade and special grenade on most FPS games.

Thats your opinion. Many RTS, MMO and Simulation types may have alot of controls. That's why you usually won't find such games on consoles for the most part.

most of you seem to be having more than a 5 button mouse.. i'll probably look into getting something with at least a few more just to make mapping of different games a bit easier.. but i think a full-on 12 side button MMO mouse would be overkill.. perhaps a 9-button, or something with just a few extra like a MOBA mouse.. though most of those are either wired or over $100, and i don't like wired mice since my desk is always too much of a mess for them

i did manage to get a workable control scheme set up for call of duty warfare using the mouse i have now and my PS3 move navigation controller, and i havent had to double up on any of the mappings on the controller to make it work either.. and could even add an extra one to the mouse wheel since there are only two weapons to swap between in that game, so whether you're scrolling up or down, its the same
It just doesn't feel all that adequate anymore, no. I use a CORSAIR Scimitar RGB Elite [www.amazon.com] and it's more or less a good universal solution for everything.

the utechsmart venus wireless is the only one i'd consider for a straight up MMO mouse, wireless and all that

I use a Steam Controller for everything.
