didn't know there was a "standard" lol, i am actually going to buy a mouse, getting a new rat from Mad Catz and its got 11 which should be more than enough for me.
It's all down to personal preference. The wife has a five button mouse and refuses to use the thumb buttons, so she's only using three. And seems to survive well enough.
If you need more buttons get a new mouse. You might also think about mapping your controls to ESDF instead of WASD to give yourself a access to more keys as an alternate.
I prefer to use a combo like Logitech G13 + Logitech G502 or G903
But that's only going to work in "some" games. Games where you basically need all the keyboard keys it's not going to be doable. Like many RTS or MMO games, or something like Arma2/3/Dayz for example
A game where you need 100+ keys is called a bad game
Thats your opinion. Many RTS, MMO and Simulation types may have alot of controls. That's why you usually won't find such games on consoles for the most part.
i did manage to get a workable control scheme set up for call of duty warfare using the mouse i have now and my PS3 move navigation controller, and i havent had to double up on any of the mappings on the controller to make it work either.. and could even add an extra one to the mouse wheel since there are only two weapons to swap between in that game, so whether you're scrolling up or down, its the same
