Direct storage 1.2, something I need to install?
.. or is it already part of Win 11?

Been watching a few videos about it and maybe I am too stupid to understand the concept since no one offers an explanation about its installation or whether its already a part of the OS.

I have seen you can download the package but hesitant because it comes from a third party site.

You dont need to do anything but update win 11 to whatever version they demand and the game must also support it. So only one game Forspoken on Windows 11.

It is a part of DirectX. It it just some overhyped generic DirectX feature.

I did read that 1.2 supports regular SSDs as well which may improve load times in the future if more games start supporting it, don´t know if I understood that correctly.

It's not doing anything special or improving anything if your games do not support it. 99.9% of PC Games don't support the feature yet.

But yes with Win11 updated to 22H2, you should have DirectStorage v1.2, which added support for SATA SSDs and HDDs.

You can clarify that you meet/exceed the DirectStorage Requirements by bringing up Xbox GameBar > Click Settings > Click Game Features. If WINKEY+G does not have it pop-up on top of whatever you have loaded up, such as a Game, you might need to enable Xbox GameBar in Windows via Settings > Gaming.

Quicker loading times are nice but the real difference would be in data streaming and CPU load during gaming.
Many new games feel broken due to CPU bottleneck partly caused by heavy data streaming. Direct Storage shifts that work from CPU to GPU.

Doesn't say anything about that in the news from Microsoft themselves.

While it does work with SATA SSDs/HDDs; it is more preferred that you use an NVME SSD to get better results.

Kind of pointless; since it's not that hard to simply shift your games around easily and simply put games you are playing now and that benefit, onto an NVME SSD.

People act like they have to have MANY NVME SSDs in their systems; not true if you learn how all of this works, even if you are not or can't use DirectStorage.

And so far it only has very basic support for DirectStorage 1.0. Bottlenecks seem to also mean there is no advantage of having anything faster than a PCIe 3.0 x4 SSD.

Win10 22H2 also has it. It is not exclusive to Win11

My understanding is only a basic implementation without the hardware acceleration features.

That said, until recently my system couldn't do DirectStorage BypassIo due to an incompatibility with the Malwarebytes Anti-Ransomware driver, but a beta of Malwarebytes fixed this as of March 30.

By the time we really see anything use it, Win10 will reach EOL anyways
