Why does Nvidia's recording have no performance impact?
I wanted to record my own gameplay for memories sake but I find OBS hits my cpu harder than I feel it should because comparatively, I feel no difference when using Nvidia's solution but there's massive usage of cpu when using OBS and the resulting input lag.

I dont understand why theres such a disparity here since I am using Nvenc in OBS so shouldnt it just offload the work to the gpu?

The theory I could come up with is that this is a laptop without a mux so specifying which gpu obs uses would impact what it could record & that somehow affects performance?

may i ask before somebody suggests anything that you provide your system setup data?
btw there are guides for obs and it is possible that your settings are wrong...

I think gpus just have a much more optimized internal hardware configuration for encoding. I don't get it either, but I'm just glad it's true. Their encoding makes cpu encoding look handicapped.

I heard that cpu encoding is technically better which probably is true, but for the simple visual comparisons I do, I just can't tell the difference. Plus the file sizes are unbeatable in some situations. I've noticed though cpu encoding gives better file sizes for certain things while gpu encoding offers better file sizes for other types of captures.

But, I'd probably notice if I was encoding profesionally or something.

Also, yeah what cpu do you have? If it's a weaker cpu it will get hit harder than a stronger one.

We need some numbers here otherwise we're just guessing blindly/assuming to your situation here.

nVidia uses CUDA cores to record gameplay. Same as OBS could, it you'd configure it to use nVenc instead of software encoder.

tldr; intel i5 8300h; 16gb ram; intel uhd 630; gtx 1050 2gb; yes I am using nvenc in obs, fresh installed on a fresh os. It bogs down my system way harder than it should.
Wichtelman May 5, 2023 @ 6:06am
which games do you try to stream?
オナニー May 5, 2023 @ 6:26am
Any game, racing, cyberpunk, hell even 2D platformers. The only reason I stopped using Nvidias recording was having the audio eventually starting to desync but now I realise something is messed with obs
A&A May 5, 2023 @ 6:31am
It depends on what encoder format you are recording.
Software X264 is using mainly the cpu.

well your laptop is too weak to stream demanding games... cyberpunk should be about 20-25 fps on low settings... that said gpu encoding should work on low demanding games with a gtx 1050 but idk how it is with laptops exactly... did you watch a guide on how to setup obs with gpu encoding?

Can you post screenshots of your obs configuration?
Bad 💀 Motha May 6, 2023 @ 6:24am
It's not realistic to think you will be able to run games well and record or live-stream on a GTX 1050.
Bad 💀 Motha May 6, 2023 @ 6:31am
You're also recording at 1920x1080
Hmm yea that's never going to run smooth on that system.

With your specs, you're better off using Geforce Experience + ShadowPlay and have it record @ 1280x720
