for example, Firefox doesnt work on Windows XP anymore... this same stuff will going to happen on Windows 7 sooner or later too. Not just Firefox, every browser, just like this Chrome/Chromium and so Steam issue.
Not just like Browsers.. and Steam... but any programs, drivers, software..
How will you download games from GOG if no any browser works on Windows 7 anymore? And then, install files dont work too..
After a while websites did the same for old files designed for Win95/98, etc.
Just like anything you download. If it's an installer you feel you may need in the future, you should back that up on another drive at the very least. So you can call upon it later.
You can't rely on websites to keep stuff forever.
Well, I do it too. Backups of various and important software as offline installers.
As far as browser like Chrome, they will just update to the last support version, then that's it. It's not going to just stop working. Maybe a good while from now, but not over night.
I doubt it would be like when support across the board stopped for WinXP. The total cut off for that was mainly due to everything moving to 64bit. Such as Firefox and Chrome moving to that and stopping the support of on-going 32bit app support.
So far you can upgrade your machine to Windows 10 for free and easily. If you download and upgrade now, your Windows 10[www.microsoft.com] machine will be ready in less than 40 minutes.
You have a few years left until ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ Microsoft support for Windows 10 ends and so to need to switch to Windows 11... do you?
No.. Whenever Steam stops support for Windows 10, you have hella time.. maybe 10 years from today on.. you dont need to buy a new PC. Windows 10 works on ANY PC/Notebook.. and so Steam.. and in 10 years you are again warned that Steam stops Windows 10 support.
You literally have 10 years of time to collect money for a "fictional" rig.. until Steam ends support for Windows 10.. same stuff as you do with Windows 7 currently.
I'm tired of hearing this.
All you might need is another drive.
Keep your Win7 and Steam as-is, download all the games you want on that OS that work. Then put Steam in Off-Line Mode and do not change it.
Install Win10 64bit 22H2 fresh on a new drive. Activate it using your old Win7/8 product key.
You don't necessarily need a whole new PC. If you were going to buy/build a brand new PC then you wouldn't use Win10.
Switch to Linux right now and avoid the pain that is Windows 10+. There are more government mandated backdoors, keyloggers, network analytics, and background services uploading all your files and pictures to government servers in Windows 8+ than there are viruses that can penetrate a secure and hardened Windows 7 installation. This is a FACT and you can search any of this by searching Windows + "NSA" or "backdoor" or "exploit": every single result is in regards to Windows 8+.
I don't even blame Steam, I blame Microsoft.
Straight up ignorance.
I use Win11 (easy to get cheap), I've played multiple games older than steam, they work just fine.
If not activating the compatibility, emulators work fine.
The only problem is older Flash games, and those are a security risk. So that's up to you.
Flash became obsolete years ago.
I have almost 0 income, and still manage to get a good PC.
Stop trying to blame "big corp" for your laziness.
Windows 7 was dropped by Microsoft. Trying to imply that Steam have to in some weird way improve security in Windows to work, is beyond ignorant. Upgrade, and move on.
some games you paid for will be inaccessible with normal means
its like buying a car, then years later the person who sold it to you builds a fence around your car and demands that you buy new wheels for it or they will block your access from your car that you bought from them
