What is "bare minimum" GPU by modern stndards?
I am about to complete my rig (AMD 5950X/32GiB RAM/2TB SSD) with a "reasonable" GPU.

Currently I have a paleolithic card suitable only for basic window rendering (G98 [Quadro NVS 295]).

OS is Linux (Debian Sid) and I plan to use it ALSO for gaming (mostly through Steam Proton).

Question is:

What is considered "bare minimum" GPU to run modern titles? (BTW: I have all AC, FC, GoW, Death Stranding, TR and similar games in my lib)

I don't care much for super-high definition/effects, but I want a decent rendering with little/no lag and a bit of "future-proof" to be able to use this thing for a few years.

I've seen a lot of guides comparing price/performance, but it's unclear if "great buy" will actually be able to run AAA games.

For comparison: my current rig (i7-8700K/32GiB RAM/1TB SSD/6TB RAID/RX580 GPU) is about to be shipped away, but it's still working OK.

Any advice?
TiA!

bare minimum and futureproof does not work so i guess you want the best price to performance for probably 1080p 60 fps... if not add more infos...

look at the fps charts and compare the gpus and their price... in my opinion the bare minimum is a gpu with 8gb vram but 12gb would be better...

With games like you have and for few years RX 6700 XT. Would not buy anything weaker these days unless you are on very low budget.

If your main focus is using Linux then look at AMD Radeon 6700 XT or 6800 XT
Bare minimum? Probably 3060 if we speaking about gaming
Modern standards like Hogwartd legacy and Last of Us?. 4070 ti or 7900 xt.

Let's cut the crap, even those are going to be obsolete by the time 2024 games launch.

The RTX 4070 Ti is likely to be obsolete or, at the very least, would lose much of its ability to run games at high res + max ingame + RT in two years' time (give or take).....12GB for such a powerful card is much like in the case for the RTX 3070 Ti some 3 years back. Released with just enough VRAM to get by, for now, that's 12GB on the RTX 4070 Ti.

Meanwhile, I believe the RX 7900 XT would still be able to do most newer games at higher setting with some degree of RT, thanks to having 20GB VRAM buffer. Much like the recent RTX 3070 vs RX 6800 comparisons...

Below is a screenshot of DSR at 3840x1080 (in terms of pixel count, >16:9 2560x1440, but <3440x1440), note the actual VRAM usage....

Thanks.
I am looking at Radeon 6700/6800 XT and thy are both in budget... at low end.
I mean: I am a bit baffled because cards with apparently same specs can have very different prices

Radeon RX 6700 XT:
Sapphire PULSE -> €383.52
... lots of other cards in between...
XFX Speedster QICK 319 Ultra -> €2834.78

Is there any reason not to chose the lowest price?

Also "XFX Speedster SWFT 319 Radeon RX 6800 XT 16 GB" at €579.00 would be in budget, but "MSI Radeon RX 6800 XT Gaming X Trio 16G Radeon RX 6800 XT 16 GB" at €1599.00 isn't.

What about the new Intel Arc A770 GPU's?

Uhmmm...
I just played Hogwarts Legacy with my rather old RX580 with no problems whatsoever.
... but I plan getting things like "Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora" if/when it launches ;)

As said: I don't care too much for fancy effects if it doesn't impair my gaming experience.
I would say the absolute bare minimum would be a gtx 1050. It still has full dx12 support and is good for 720p in newer titles. It's even better with FSR. You could run at 1920x1080 and turn on FSR and render at 720p and still get crisp hud elements and text but game will render lower.

I've been using a gtx 1050 for a while now.

Integrated gpu’s are better than 1050.

Then I guess a rx 580 is all you need.
thats an impossible question to answer as whats considered acceptable to you.like 4k at
60fps is unacceptable to me.i refuse to go backwards in FPS while others find 60fps and even
less acceptable.so its really what do you think is acceptable.as far as GPU goes again
what ever will give you the gaming experience you want

RX 6700 XT price should be around €350-400
RX 6800 XT price should be around €500-600

Intel Arc doesnt have good enough driver compatibility yet imho. Can also have issues with older games.
