Is gaming off an external ssd good enough for new games?
Or am i better off putting it on an internal hdd

Always internal if you can...

My best recommendation is always internal, but never the system OS drive.

Sounds like a terrible idea, but if you needn an SSD anyways just get one and then try it and if it runs like garbage just use the SSD for a regular external drive for holding data.

That was a little misleading. You absolutely can use OS drive. Most gamers will run OS and core software on its own SSD, while keeping real applications on a separate one, and sometimes games on a 3rd.

The main reason is if something is going to go wrong with your computer or you get hacked, its probably going to take down the OS drive, leaving your games and date safe.

All that said, you can absolutely run games off OS drive, it is totally fine, and could be beneficial if your other drives are slower.

I use a USB 3 external SSD and have not run into any issues with games so far.

It is great to be able to reset Windows when I want or use the same drive in VM Windows / Linux with little issue from things like drive locking or bitlocker.

It is fine to use it with USB C.

As internal HDD probably the safer option.

They are slower that SSDs of course.

Either: Swap around steam games to faster media, the one you play a lot.
Or: use a caching solution,. I use primocache software myself.

You are still bottlenecked by the USB protocol though.

and you're still bottlenecked even with an NVME SSD

Why should we argue about a SSD while it is still better than a sata HHD?

I never said that you couldn’t. It is just best practice for data storage security and lightly on performance. But using the OS drive taxes the drive…

I never said “cannot”…

I know that reading and comprehension is hard, just try your best.
