Samsung 990 Pro Heatsink question(Is it worth it?)
So I have been looking at getting the Samsung 990 Pro 2TB for awhile now. Have had my eye on it since last summer when it was announced. But I have been waiting for the version with the heatsink. I figured the included heatsink would keep it at a good temp, and I do love the look of it, with its RGB lights.

Only thing is, it has not been available. Newegg was saying for awhile that it would be available on March 13, but March 13 rolls around and it is out of stock. Even Samsung's website doesn't give a definite date on when it would be available if you order it.

So, basically I am tired of waiting, and thinking about purchasing the non-heatsink version. It is a lot less, as the heatsink version goes for $309. So, my question is, would Samsung's heatsink really make a difference in temps over the heatsinks that already come with my motherboard. Is it worth it to just wait, and get the heatsink version?

Also, before everyone starts telling my about Samsung's firmware issues, I am well aware of what happened. But to my knowledge the issue has been rectified and would not affect someone like me who is purchasing one now after the whole ordeal.

I was also looking at the WD SN850X, but I still would much rather have the Samsung 990 Pro(even though the 850X is much cheaper) as I already have 3 other Samsung SSDs in my PC(970 Evo Plus, 870 Evo, and 850 Evo), and I would like to keep things consistent. And I would be able to manage all my storage devices through Samsung Magician, as if I bought the WD drive, I would most likely be installing WD's proprietary software as well, and that is just extra stuff that would make things cumbersome.

If your motherboard has a heatsink, it will be fine. That's what I used for mine.

It does.

Gigabyte Z590 Aorus Elite AX

I think I might just go ahead and get the non-heatsink.

But really, it is not even about temps at this point, the heatsink, with its RGB lights, just looks so damn cool, lol.

If it looks cool to you, then I'd say it might be worth it. I think that's important. I pretty much skip/don't even consider motherboards without the cool looking motherboard backpanels and heatsinks on them. They always looked ugly before this, but what choice did we have. I couldn't go back to the ugly looking motherboards without all that cool sleek looking stuff on it.

Thats a good point, I feel the same way. And while my Aorus Elite AX is fine, I actually think it doesn't look sleek enough. Not as sleek as its Z590 Aorus Master sibling, for example. Or really some of those super expensive Asus motherboards. But when I bought it in 2021, it was the one that had the features I needed, at the right price. But if I could have done it again, I might have just spent a little more for the Aorus Master, or Pro.

I am actually not a big fan of Gigabyte as a whole, but I think for motherboards they do a good job. They look good, lol, they have the features, are well built, but most importantly, the price is right.

I was going to ask how that board is treating you. I know it's an Intel but still wanted your opinion.

I'm strongly considering a Gigabyte (almost 100% positive I'm going to get their brand) B650 Aorus Pro. They have the B650 Aorus Elite AX but I'm going to pay the little extra for the Aorus Pro for peace of mind. I know it would bug me, and so that's why I'm planning on spending a bit more money. For that peace of mind, even though I am confident that even if I were to get the Aorus Elite AX I would still be satisfied. I'm paying a little extra to sleep better.

This ASUS motherboard has seriously screwed me up.

But I think you should know yourself and how much it would bother you every time you think of that new SSD to not have the heatsink on there. If you think it will constantly bug you, I would get it. If you think you'd get over it and be ok without it then don't.

I really like the Gigabyte motherboard. I like their bios too.

I used to just be an Asus guy for motherboards, but GIgabyte is solid. For motherboards anyway.

Just fit your own heatsink. They sell them for as little as $10 and they just clip on.
If your motherboard came with SSD armor just use that.

My laptop is equipped with four SSDs.

2 TB 980 Pro
2 TB 980 Pro (BeQuiet Heatsink)
4 TB 990 Pro with Heatsink
Stock 2 TB SSD from Samsung

All my SSDs run at 60°C in idle and with 2/4 fans running on 1500 rpm.

Under load my 990 Pro that I use for gaming heats up to 73°C, all the other SSDs heat up as well because of the surrounding heat affecting them, they reach 71°C with 4/4 fans running on 85%.

If I set all four fans to 100% speed, 4800 rpm, the maximum temperature under load is 67°C - 72°C.

They're running pretty hot, but it's just a laptop after all.

I used the one that came with my asus rog crosshair vIII hero and it seems likes it keeps it cool only problem i don't like is how it sits behind my gpu.

my sata-600 ssd samsung pro 1tb has since I am using it (2016) for many hours a day not even had a single dead sector..

its overal health is still at 99.98% (so a few sectors do show minute wear.. but have not failed yet)

for amy classical sata HD, m.2 or even usb sticks phone memory or such you expect at least a few % failed sectors after 5 years of use..

so I can affirm samsung pro disks are fantastic.

granted this one was still MLC not TLC as today is the standard and sansung since has reduxed the warrabty down from 10 to 5 years.. but still..

they aint the fastest.. or largest.
and CERTAINLY not the cheapest.

but they are the most durable.
while on speed still good enough.

This thread was quite old before the recent post, so we're locking it to prevent confusion.
