rtx 4070 is going to be the most sold gpu in EU
hear me out and bear with me. for 599€ it's going to offer the best value to those looking for better efficiency ( 185W ) and decent performance ( close to 3080 ).

the 3080 is currently sold for 700+ for the 10gb version and the 12gb version costs 800+.
then there is the issue with transient spikes that would require a lot of people to upgrade their psu.

the problem is that amd equivalents like the 6800-6950xt are still relatively expensive and power hungry.

so unfortunately, nvidia is going to make a profit with this gpu whenever it releases.

It probably will sell because it is affordable, but it is by all accounts a very poor upgrade from the 3070.

Ray Tracing is using a lot of VRAM and we are getting absurd situations where AMD cards can do better because they have enough memory.

It’s close to insanity that NVIDIA is giving less VRAM than consoles have. PC used to have more than 10x more. Ps3 had 0.25GB VRAM when PC had 4GB.
What happened?
planned obsolescence. you could argue that nvidia, amd and intel, were aware of asset streaming bottlenecks and developed their own proprietary solution like rtx/io but it will take at least another 5 years until it's implemented.

so if the 5000 series by nvidia, still offer 8-12gb vram for the 60-70 cards, then it's clearly intentional.

hell even if you own a 3060ti, it's a poor upgrade. just skip it and see what amd has to offer

In some sense, everything is intentional, but I don't believe it was an evil plan. Nvidia is simply providing what customers want. People were choosing these cards and didn't want to pay more or choose AMD. For the same reason, people will be buying 12GB cards because the lesson has not been learned.

It also won't be Nvidia convincing people on forums that 12GB is plenty for years to come, and if there are any problems, it's because of bad optimization and the PS5 is weaker anyway. It's all so predictable.

Yep, nVidia provides what customers want. When it suits nVidia. When not - tough luck.
It's not evil, as it depends what side of the fence you are. All nice and sunny on theirs.
But it's definitely a plan.

The loyal suckers on a budget, who can't afford the more expensive models but don't jump in the competition's boat, are rewarded with subpar products carrying expiry date "stickers".
The suckers swallow it, while nVidia acknowledges and profits from the status quo, pushing it a little more the following gen.

Micro Center continues to be a relatively ethical seller. Several models of rtx 4070 are now selling at msrp of 599 USD. :happystar2022:

I mean there are already people in this discussion here arguing that tlou remake is a terrible port, despite it running much better on amd equivalents like the 6800.

and if tlou is a bad example, then what about hogwarts legacy? the 3070 can't keep up at all. the textures constantly swap in and out, which ends up in a stuttery mess.

with that said, I'm happy. either this will be a harsh wake-up call for those that denied the fact that 10gb of vram is not enough for 4k or people will double down on it and keep refusing it's a problem...

whatever the case, I think it's safe to say that it will only get worse from now on, until microsoft finally implements those proprietary hardware solutions

yeah, 4070 are selling for like €660 retail right here in europe. which is a pretty bad?? deal i think.
Very expensive.
cheapest is € 650 Gainward GeForce RTX 4070 Ghost with 2 fan :tigerinablanket:

i would buy maybe for 500€ but unless that happens i stay at 3rd gen and will just crank down settings.

Some AIB models of the RTX 4070 with the more basic coolers like Pallit, Zotac and Gainward available in the UK are available for £589 VAT incl. Not sold out on the second day of release as well.

I'm liking the lower power draw but I'm more excited about the RTX super resolution AI upscaling coming to VLC media player for local files. I hope AMD are working on something similar too.

I was taken aback by the 4070 Ti cards priced at over 1 000 euros in an Fnac store this morning. I had no idea that was the price point now.

Palit GeForce RTX 4070 Dual, 12GB GDDR6X sells for 639€ but only for germans and it seems they have to pay an extra 10€ for delivery... so yeah dual slot, dual fan setup with terrible vrm on a mid range gpu for 650€.

scalpers and miners truly ruined the enthusiast market.

This is NVIDIA for you. Their current prices are dreadful and their products bland, but there isn't much alternative.
