Should I get a new PSU?
I'm upgrading my PC and I'm wondering if I need to get a new PSU or not. It's a corsair RM1000 I got in 2014 so it's pretty old now but it still runs perfectly.

According to corsair the mean time for failure is 100,000 hours so even if I used it every hour I was awake that's like 17 years so that makes me think it's a waste of money and creating unnecessary ewaste to get a new one.

Or should I not risk my expensive new components and just get a new psu?

Sorry if this is stupid I have anxiety about everything.

Plus if you are doing a modern day build then you want a PSU at least made in 2021 or newer. Even better would be a newer PSU model with the latest 16pin 12V connector on it.

Corsair RMx series is good PSUs, they come with 10 years warranty. You are still inside the warranty support.

Also, they come with all the protection needed, so don't worry about blowing up or anything.

I would use it until it fails or face some incompatibility issues.

Yea it's not going to go BANG and fry your hardware like those no-name crap PSUs would.

RM units from 2013 (which have an orange label) weren't that good, they classify as a tier C nowadays which is for cheaper low~mid range systems. It's the RMx 2015 that was actually good and still tier A.

It wouldn't sustain an RTX 4090 or an RX 7900-XTX, at least for very long at this stage in its life. Would never recommend keeping a power supply that long regardless unless the warranty is good enough like Corsair's that they'll give you a new unit even after a decade, companies which don't have as good warranty support you should probably replace them much sooner.

PSU should be replaced every 5 years.

This is the original RM model from 2014 not the x series. The psu only had a warranty of 5 years.

Thanks it is a 2014 RM with the orange label. It would be running a 3080 so only about 100w more than my current gpu.

But it is still recommend to replace PSU every 5 years since it is a fancy video card.

Modern GPUs have power spikes, it can spike much higher than its 320~350W TGP. If your RM unit isn't able to sustain such spikes, it can trip and shut off.

Get a new RM series, it's considerably better than the older Non-X models prior to 2019 and still doesn't break the bank. You can get an RM750e (2023) for 99$ even. I recommend getting any model that's made 2021 onwards.

My PSU has a 10-year warranty so every 10-years or more for some PSU's. Some have 5-years, but we go by warranty length or failure of hardware.

Go with the best PSU brands, namely EVGA or SuperFlower.
Warranty is not a lifespan of PSU. It is for something if there is something wrong with the psu, then under warranty you can get replacement. But only if it is within the agreement.

Not necessarily, a company can be overconfident in their products and offer a really long warranty period. These companies have a lot of garbage power supplies, it’s not all trustworthy.

That would rather dumb from a business model standpoint as that means you will be replacing products more then you should be.

Most PSUs since around 2014/2015 comes with 5, 7 or 10 year warranty depending on the model#
My supernova is almost 10 years old and it still kinda smells new. I lost count how many PCs it's powered so far, maybe 20 different PC configs. Could actually be more. I've had this thing in just about every build you can imagine.

Yes, my EVGA Supernova is just now five years old and delivers power everywhere just fine.

It is not leaving this build any time soon.
