Playing in laptop with charger will damage battery?

Hi!

I recently give as a present a laptop (Lenovo Legión 5 Gen 6 15ITH6H i5, 16GB, RTX 3060) but the battery runs out in 1h and without charger the software cap the specs to medium and 30 FPS.

Some users told to playing with the charger always, so my question is about if playing all the time with the charger will damage the battery or if this is a myth. On the net I read It is a myth and the battery won't be damaged, but I prefer to ask.

It wont.

Lenovo has started to ship sodium ion batteries with their mos recent devices, these batteries are much cheaper than litium-based ones, they also charge faster but have less charge cycles.

I am unsure if these batteries will behave differently under these circumstances, assuming your laptop is outfitted with one it may not.

Hey,that is a gaming laptop it is designed to be plugged in always if you are gaming. If you are doing general browsing you can use battery. You can get max gaming performance when plugged in . For the battery it has a certain limit or charging cycles so best to plugged if most of the time its for gaming . I've done this on my 4 year old laptop and no issues.

Laptops use logic-switching to turn off the charging when it's done so it can't over-charge the battery.

Laptops have always been designed to run off Wall Power without a Battery; unlike a Phone or Tablet which feeds all power from wall to battery and then to the device.

To play games, plugging into the wall is a must. When you run off battery you will only get around 30-50% of the full performance compared to plugged into the wall.

How many times you charge the battery.
All batteries will go through wear & tear over time as you charge it.
No ways around that.

Most batteries are good for 1000 cycles or so.

No; while the Laptop maker might only warranty the original battery for approx 1-year; they often should have enough life worth of cycles to last 3-5 years, depending on use/storage; etc.

If you fully discharge your laptop twice per day every day it would take you about 4-5 years to fully kill a sodium battery and twice as much for its lithium counterpart. And this is the cheap battery you can replace for a tenner.

Only thing you will really run in to is that the battery capacity will start to noticably drop over time.

I've seen plenty of Laptop batteries run into problems without 6-12 months or shortly after the 12 month warranty ran out; to where the battery all of a sudden would drain out in like 1 hour. Where as normally it would get 3-4 hours.

But yes, in theory and under normal conditions 4-5 years is a good bet.

When playing games it is very normal for a laptop to last 1-2 hours or even less. The machine uses a lot more power when gaming then while playing a YouTube video.

You can squeeze more playtime out of it by locking the FPS at 30 or 40. Results will vary by game.

sodium ion batteries? This must be a recent thing, because last time I checked this was still in experimental stages.

I've got a MSI Modern 14 laptop, and the preinstalled driver (by MSI) says that if almost all of my usage is while plugged-in (it is), then for prolonging the life of the battery the battery should be kept at 50%, and this driver, if set to this mode by user, does so — it limits the max charge to 50%. It's not a default behavior, but optional. This optional mode works even while the laptop is turned off but still connected to the power socket.

I don't know the type of the battery though.

It's actually recommended to plug them in when you game. No companies ever mentioned anything about it being detrimental. It's the only way to get full performance.
