b550 motherboard with NVME SSD
Does it matter what goes where? It has 2 slots.

I have a 1tb samsung 980 pro in the top slot and a WD black SN770 in the bottom slot

I installed a new install of windows 10 on the sn770 in the bottom slot. It crashes after a few minutes and AMD driver installer for the video card keeps saying unsupported operating system...

AMD Ryzen 7 3700X

16.0GB Dual-Channel DDR4 @ 1496MHz (16-17-17-35)

Motherboards come with a manual. The manual is also on the manufacturer's website. What does the manual say?

Well is your Windows 10 installer up to date? Are you sure your GPU drivers are up to date/correct version of windows?

I'm not too sure about the new nvme ssd so idk.

And it's probably a very old windows 10 iso I got wayyy back.
How does the system crash exactly?

Freezes for 5-10 seconds, then I get the unhappy face screen...new style blue screen I guess?

Can you try running the OS with this drive in the top slot instead? It would rule out the chipset being the problem.

Also I recommend doing a BIOS update to the latest version if you haven't already.

The second NVMe slot is connected differently from the top one, it runs using a PCI-e 3 x2 connection via the chipset, which itself is connected to the CPU via an PCI-e 4 x4 connection.

The other PCI-e slots other than the top one are also connected in this manner.
If you dont mind, setup a RAID0 configuration through BIOS and use both SSDs as one, reinstall Windows afterwards.

Will not work reliably and you will lose 500GB of storage, they are two different drives of different sizes.

Also an OS-level software RAID is superior.

Keep the 980 Pro in the top M2 slot and the SN770 in the bottom slot. The B550 only supports PCI Express 3.0 to the bottom slot, and while both of those SSDs are PCI Express 4.0, the 980 Pro is the faster of the two, so I would keep it in the top slot regardless of which drive you install Windows 10 to (though I would also put the system on the faster drive unless there's some other use that is already using it).

Well I ended up just installing windows 11 and it works fine. I moved the sn770 to the top but I might move it back after I do some performance tests.
