is an gtx 1660ti stil good in 2023?
Hi

i have an Nvidia GTX 1660TI with 6 GB VRAM and an I5 9300H CPU. Is it still good in running new games from this year on? I can still play last of us on 50-60 fps on medium graphics. Anyone in here with an gtx 1660ti?

It's not like there is a massive difference between a 1660 super or 1660ti.

For 1080p 60? It's decent. For 1440p 60? Absolutely not.

The only problem may be the CPU Intel i59300h?

It is a quad core from 2019 and they do show their age where games use more threads than a CPU has cores.

Monitor your system load while gaming. If the CPU cores are maxed while the GPU isn't, you know the CPU is holding you back.
If the GPU is at 100% you know the GPU is your current limit.

Keep in mind, there always will be a limit, there is no perfect balance. It's up to you to determine if you are content with the current performance.

2020 is when Intel made a huge uplift in cores and enabled hyper threading on i5 and i3 platforms.

The 9300H does have hyperthreading. But it is still a quadcore in a laptop.

Too bad you can't upgrade a laptop.

9300H is a mobile BGA processor. Thats an important detail not to miss because it means the 1660 Ti is not a desktop model. The mobile models can easily fall behind by 30%.
It depends on the games you're playing. If you're trying to play the really brand new games based on Unreal Engine 5: nope. Even 8GB cards run awful with maxed out VRAM and low FPS on UE5 titles, even on minimum possible settings, even at 1080p. Probably 12~16 GB cards will be necessary to do well with UE5. There aren't many games using the new technology just yet so it's not such a big deal right now.

I'm guessing here on this next part: By this time next year that might be a different story though.

Most games don't run like garbage on old hardware. My rule for a game is simple: if it runs poorly, don't buy it.

For all the criticism I give The Last of Us: Part 1, at the very least they have tried to optimize for lower end systems.

Game developers need to step up and wake up. Games today aren't much more advanced than games from years ago, besides ray tracing, yet they require more and more power and VRAM due to developer laziness.

Games are seriously now tech demos -- Cyberpunk is the ultimate disgrace -- a game heavy on hardware with zero substance to show for it besides "technology" that still produces inaccurate and non-realistic lighting.

In Last of us part one i tried lowering the resolution and the graphics and using amd fsr but it still runs 50 - 60 fps. Does it run poorly on other systems too?

Might be a CPU bound situation since it's poorly optimized in CPU usage too. Even if your CPU isn't at 100% it can still be bound depending on what instruction is being ran on it and what other work it is doing.

It could also be storage, memory, or other factors unique to your system. If it's a laptop, some do restrict power usage aggressively while others do not. Some operate differently based on charger, some offer operation without a battery or charge the battery and run the system at max.

If your battery drains while you play games, it may trigger the battery's circuit protection and drop your performance dramatically (you will be limited in how much power can be drawn to protect the battery from overheating and excessive wear).

For all games up to 2020, it's absolutely perfect even for 2560x1440@165Hz, even with an i5-4690K which has 4 cores and 4 threads. I limited DOOM Eternal (2020 game, launched on my birthday to be specific) to 100 FPS because of noisy fan bearings which can sound scary (and incredibly annoying), but heating is absolutely not an issue. Anyway, the game runs at surprisingly high settings in 2560x1440, it's perfectly stable 100 FPS without any stuttering, not a single crash or any other kind of issue, really. Just don't expect more than 60 FPS in Red Dead Redemption 2 in 2560x1440, that's all. Other than that, I get perfect 60 FPS at decent settings in that game, but you have to optimize it properly. There are a couple of in-depth videos with the most efficient possible settings where all options and their effects on both graphics and performance were analyzed.

I have deicided to keep this card for some years. Since it works good in 2023 games.

Apparently you haven't actually played many new games. If you try to run any of the new Unreal Engine 5 games on that card you would see how it would perform very poorly (< 30 FPS at all times).
