framerate cap
i have a 165 fps monitor, if i get the option to cap fps to 144 or 240 which should i pick? and when should i uncap or cap it? i don't know much about fps and all that, Some games my gpu panel has a ♥♥♥♥ ton of extra fps and others it can go under 165 due to preformance

I personally wouldn't cap fps lower than refresh rate - but you can do what feels better for you

Well, I say it depends on the game, Im more of a casual gamer, game to enjoy, so I typically allow my FPS to just go to whatever it can, but if you are competitive, like an FPS gamer, you probably should cap the FPS to whatever your can get all the time in game, that way you can get a consistent feel, rather than going from say 160 to 300fps, might not and will not feel drastic, but it can throw some things off when it comes to aiming.

Depends on the game, depends on how that game feels

It depends on your preferences. Objectively it is best to go for lower input latency. In that regard to add to what Viking2121 wrote, a higher frame rate can result in higher input latency if the the GPU is the limiting piece of hardware. This is why Nvidia Reflex and Latency Flex were created.

That aside it is best to go for the highest frame rate one can get.

As Viking2121 also advised, your preference may not align with what is most advantageous, use what is comfortable.

enable gsync, or vsync with it uncapped

I have 240hz monitor, but i cap mine to 120fps to keep my cpu/gpu cool. Besides, the difference is barely noticable above 120fps to me
If those are your only two options for a frame rate limiter then you could disable all frame rate limiting and just use vsync instead. That would limit your frame rate to exactly 165 FPS for your monitor without having to fiddle with anything.

If double buffer V-sync is used in this case, if the frame rate drops below 165 per second there will be a performance stall. An in game frame rate limiter will incur less input lag too.

The game is not giving them an option to limit their frame rate to their monitor's refresh rate though. Therefore the only option that they have is Vsync. Or using the nvidia control panel and try it there but that's rather advanced and not something most people will figure out. Vsync is far easier for others to use. Just switch it on and enjoy gaming.

Depends on the monitor you have and the make of the GPU.

I always set the cap in NVIDIA Control Panel to two less than the refresh rate of the monitor. That's what NVIDIA recommends. The benefits of doing anything else are marginal.

G Sync does nothing if the frames go above the refresh rate so I'd lock it.

Same can be said for the visible frames, you aren't seeing them. You shave off a couple milliseconds that most casual gamers will not see at all period.

I still happily game with 60 fps no problem on demanding titles. And that's someone who's used to 165 hz at this point.
