What kind of PC case do I have?
My PC case (in inches) is 20 x 8 x 17 (LxWxH). That's a Mid tower case right? I want to install a new ATX motherboard but wanted to make sure it's not a Mini tower.

Can you provide your complete system specs?
You just have to make sure that an ATX board fits.
305 mm × 244 mm (12″ × 9,6″)
So you should be fine.

Yea there seems to be extra room for a bigger motherboard but I just wanted to make sure.

Simply measuring it will confirm this, instead of having to guess based on a "seems" scenario.

That said, ATX is a fair bit taller than mATX, so you can sort of tell it's limited to the latter or not if you're familiar enough with the two sizes. If it has an mATX motherboard and there's room for an additional few PCI slots beneath it, it'll probably take ATX (can also count the rear PCI expansion slots, as mATX tends to be three slots worth or so, and ATX tends to be around twice as much). After all, it would probably be a bit unusual for the case to be markedly "taller" than what mATX needs, but not support ATX, as there's not really anything common between them, so if it seems like it supports more than mATX then chances are it will support ATX.

And those case dimensions certainly suggest ATX. My case is 230 x 460 x 515 millimeters, or 20 x 9 x 18 inches (reordered as you had yours), and mine is ATX.

My guess is 99% yes it supports ATX.

But I'd be listing the exact case (or system) and/or measuring it to confirm it if I wasn't familiar with it. No harm in checking and ruling out any uncertainties.

Ok. Another concern I had is the I/O shield panel in the back. That should fit fine with my case right? Are I/O shields universal in dimensions?
Can you take and share some pictures of your case?
if its an oem, it may be btx or custom for the board

take pic, or post brand/model
Those specs resemble m-atx. You can also open the PC and view it's x16 expansion slots. The PC format is dependent on number of expansion slots. Two slots are itx, four is m-atx, atx has seven.

BTX? Bro that stuff is like 20 years old now.
yea but dell/hp still make custom boards and cases for them

Even if it's a M-ATX case, can it still fit an ATX motherboard? As long as there's enough room in the case to accommodate it right?

Not likely.
Why don't you do yourself a favor and buy a new midi case for the new ATX board?

m-atx is smaller than atx

My case is 17x20''. The ATX motherboard I want is 12x9.6''. How can that not fit? There's enough room in there for it. It's a tight fit but also enough for PSU at the bottom. You guys with different answers are confusing me now.

size of the case does not determine the boards it supports
some psus are mounted in different ways, or layout may differ some

open it up and take a pic
if the case has 7 expansion slots, its most likely atx
