RTX 4060 51W idle ?!
Anybody experiencing this too . Or as its new the software like GPU-Z readings are wrong ?

It s Palit RTX 4060 Dual but i found reports for MSI RTX 4060 Ventus as well .

The official response

RTX 4060 doesn't support the detection of power consumption.

So the power consumption (51W) you saw in 3rd party software is the estimated value of the NVIDIA GPU.

It is also the lowest value of RTX 4060,
It's the same for all RTX 4060 cards.

Actually, the real power consumption under idle might be around 10W.
If it's real 51W the GPU temperature would rise to over 60C quickly and trigger the fan spinning.

What do you expect it to idle at?
In addition, do you have "prefer maximum performance" set in the nVidia drivers? This will result in the minimum freuency being the base clock speed, resulting in higher power consumption and temperatures. It should be expected with that. Do you have browsers (or any other applications) using it (via hardware acceleration)? That's not very idle, if so.

That said, I've heard of "high" (relatively speaking) idle with some newer GPUs, but it's often AMD GPUs or with multiple displays that this seems to occur.

You can also try other software (personal recommendation of Libre Hardware Monitor) to see what it shows, but if two show that, it starts to lessen the chances that readings are wrong.

There re only 2 options - normal and prefer max performance but it s at normal . no , optimal power unfortunately .

igorslab reported the same issue but on Win 11 not 10 but i am using 10 .

for MSI RTX 4060 Ventus the same readings by GPU-Z

Thats not really how that option works, it only works in 3d accelerated games or software and even then its still maybe has an effect, the Normal mode in game you should see gpu clocks fluctuate a lot based on the load of the GPU, prefer max performance, the card will tend to stick near it max base clock most of the time regardless of load. this should have an effect with most browsers without video or a browser game running.

Windows power plans int he settings menu may help somewhat, I always stick my system ont he best energy savings and still disable sleep, that should allow the card and any device to take advantage of the lower power states. Other than that, you could have some background software that might be consuming GPU resources like shadowplay for example.
The core voltage seems normal.
Have you tried with an older driver?

Well it seems there's some known occurrence for this then, based on the article?

It definitely has an effect outside games.

With prefer maximum performance enabled, it will never drop below base clock speed for any reason. It doesn't matter if it's at the desktop doing "nothing" or in a game. All that setting does is set the base clock speed as the minimum clock speed state that it won't drop below, ever.
Maybe this is a problem because there are only 2 versions that officially support RTX 4060. The latest 536.67 and 536.40.

In Nvidia's download driver page, there is an section "Beta, older drivers and more". It is located at the end of the page.

Yes, I'm aware of that. That part wasn't directed at you, after all.

It seems like you've found some information describing that this might be "expected", even if it's not "intended", in some situations? So it seems like you've found your answer? I know that's not a solution but it seems to answer that yes, for some reason, high idle is happening on some RTX 4060s?
It could be a driver problem. Similar to AMD's latest launch drawing over 100 watts of power if connected to 144Hz screens. So you can't say Nvidia is junk.
If you look at it, almost all hardware or software companies rush to get their products to market and as a result, there is always something that doesn't work like normal.
Did you all see this? You're def. not alone but...what is it? Idling at 51-52 watts is huge compared to what it should be--your expectation of 7-14 watts. Shoot mine is idling w/browser open at 9 watts.

Seems this is a developing issue.

Edit: OK I see this MSI one has already been acknowledged. Hopefully a new driver will come out very soon.

In advanced power settings, can PCIe -> "Link state power management" make a difference?
Lower resolution and refresh rate?
It is an open issue on the NVIDIA drivers forum. You will have to wait until something is fixed.

Have to scroll down a bit to find it under "Open Issues."

By idle, I assume you are also saying that the fans aren't spinning, correct?
I wouldn't rely on gpu-z

I would run afterburner or AIDA64 (this is my go to, I have a licensed version running all the time on my PC) to confirm. IIRC cpuz and gpuz often report figures incorrectly, in my experiences, temperature.

May be the same for wattage

your smart TV will idle at 50Watts as well, and most likely your console systems are doing the same. everything we have now a days is idleing if its not completely powered off, even your cell phone chargers are drawing current when not in use.

also turn your fan turning on having fan speed at 0% is why your GPU temps are at 51C

turn your fans on keep them running drop that temp down to 35C
