Theft by Steam
Taking away the ability to play the games you paid for, on the platform that they were released on, is basically theft of your property. Why would I ever purchase another game from Steam again? Disgusting.

Factually incorrect. Steam wasn't out when games were only playable on Windows 98. Steam launched in a closed beta in 2002, and launched publicly at the end of 2003. Windows Xp launched in 2001 and had surpassed Windows 98 market share by the time Steam launched. When Steam launched, games were playable on Windows 98SE, Windows ME, Windows Xp, and somethings on Windows 2000.

Regardless, Steam dropped support for Windows 98SE, Windows ME back in July 2007. The same whining and same arguments in all of these threads crying about Windows 7 were made back then as well. They also discontinued support for Windows 2000 back in 2010. The same thing also occurred again back in 2019 when they dropped support for Windows Xp and Windows Vista.

Further, the same thing that the people crying about needing hardware upgrades also happened back in 2007 when Steam discontinued support for Windows 98SE/ME. Steam began requiring CPUs with SSE support at that same time and users who had older CPUs without SSE support had to upgrade their CPUs to supported hardware in order to load the Steam client. Back then the Steam hardware survey listed CPUs without SSE support at 1.03%

I'm well aware, hence the timeline laid out in the post you just quoted.

HL2 shipping with Windows 98 support isn't the same as "when games were only playable on win98" as you originally claimed. Again, when Steam launched Windows Xp had already surpassed Windows 98 market share and Games launching on Steam were already supporting Windows Xp.

Unless your system is from 1999, it will run Windows 10.
