Having literally no seeking time and constant read speeds no matter where the data is stored certainly helps.

Yes you can. The PS3 just doesn't support trim. There's also no gain for some reason.
That is due to the PS3 using the rather outdated SATA1 instead of SATA2 or even SATA3. Only 1.5Gigabit of bandwidth does limit your drive. In essence, while a SSD will work, it will be heavily throttled.

SATA3 provides up to 6 Gigabit of bandwidth. So, yeah, a LOT less due to Sony being cheap.

Not really due to Sony being "cheap". Was just the technology of the time. SATA revision 2 (SATA 3GB/s) wasn't ratified until the end of 2004. The PlayStation 3 was launched in Nov 2006. The hardware design and implementation would have already been selected and done well before the standard for the second generation SATA interface was ratified.

Also, the "SATA1, SATA2, SATA3 are really misnomers (according to the SATA standards body).

ps3 is sata2

Nope, SATA-150 aka SATA1.

IIRC you're both technically correct. The original PS3 (most likely being discussed here as "FAT PS3") was SATA 1.5GB/s. I do believe with the refreshed "fat PS3" models (numbers below) with the 40GB, 80GB, and 160GB HDDs the SATA controller in the southbridge for those models was SATA 3Gb/s.

CECHGxx
CECHHxx
CECHJxx
CECHKxx
CECHLxx
CECHMxx
CECHPxx
CECHQxx

After which all of the 2000-series (Slim) were SATA 3Gb/s IIRC.
We PC users just use those SATA1, 2, 3 terms but what they refer to are this...

SATA1 = 1.5Gb/s
SATA2 = 3.0Gb/s
SATA3 = 6.0Gb/s

1, 2, 3 is just a generation based term for the SATA in question

I know, hence why I pointed out that those are misnomers.

sata2/3 drives need the jumper to work with sata1 controllers
i have never needed to use one on a ps3 fat or compatible

only needed it with the first gen sata1 mobo and ide/pata adapters
Then I highly doubt PS3 has SATA1. As I've always just been able to plug and play various 2.5 inch sata drives with it over the years. Even if doesn't have SATA3, any ssd would greatly help. You also won't have to keep booting into Safe mode like once a month to optimize the HDD. Which I kept having to do when GTAV was on the PS3 HDD as a means to maintain game performance. The ssd will read faster even if the files get fragmented.
Thus seems a pretty complete wiki. Given the pata/sata bridge it suggests some revisions even had pata blu-ray drives! I’d imagine the sata revisions per ps3 revision will be buried in there, sonewhere.

I have never seen a PS3 have PATA (aka IDE); maybe a very rare one in Japan some place; but never one I've seen on the consumer market (not even the 1st Gen Fat PS3) in USA. Every one I've seen has standard PC desktop style SATA connections. It might be possible that the Bluray used a custom Laptop style SATA where the Data + Power is all included in a single connection; but the SATA connection for the original storage drive should be standard SATA data connector, which means separate power connector provided to connect to the 2.5 inch HDD/SSD coming off the PS3's PSU.

PATA is something we had back in the days of Original Xbox and PS1.

It is. As I noted previously the original models were SATA 1.5Gb/s

They used the 88SA8040-TBC1 (SATA 1.5Gb/s to PATA 133 bridge) for the original BD drives to connect to the SATA 1.5Gb/s controller in the southbridge on those models.

SATA to PATA IDE bridge chip. This is used on motherboards with a PATA blu-ray drive: early PS3 (up to including CECHKxx/DIA-002)

And actually looking through the motherboards for the different models some more it doesn't appear this was changed for any of the "fat" models nor the original slim models. I'm not sure about the "super slim" models

There were multiple models of the blueray drive used in the original PS3s and yes the Blueray drive in the models up to CECHKxx/DIA-002 were PATA drives. The HDDs were all SATA 1.5Gb/s in them.
