Sometimes patches might be a smaller 1GB download, but decrypts and/or patch across the entire lot. That can temporary use a lot of space.
Try this...
Under your Steam Client > Steam > Settings > Downloads
Clear the "Download Cache"
That will remove what it's downloaded to start over again, but free the space as well.
Then under your Steam Library, right-click the Game > Properties > Local Files.
Select "Verify Integrity of Game Files"
That will check the entire game files against the latest version online and download the require ones needed. It might download more than the original patch but require less space, as it just replaces the files rather than patching them.
use a larger drive, to install it, then use steam to move it
I would recommend checking what the largest game is on your PC and using that as a reference of how much free space that is actually needed. I would leave double the space on my drive so updates can navigate.
These answers might reveal the reason.
if the game is over 30g 90g may not be enough free space
66.54 Gigs , so yeah 90 may not be enough room ....
Keep in mind to update a game, Steam creates a copy of EVERY file that is going to be updated. Then it decompresses them if necessary, applies the update, recompresses if necessary and then copies the files back to their original space overwriting the outdated ones.
So, depending on how many files are affected, you could end up with TWO copies of the game, temporarily.
