Upgrade gpu, or everything else?
Thinking of a temporary upgrade while waiting for next gen. So considering either a new gpu or moba/cpu/ram etc
Currently got rtx 2070s, r9 3900x, 16gb ddr4 3000mhz. What would I benefit from the most?
Any tips and advice is appreciated

keep it as is for now, or until you need a faster cpu or gpu

nvme ssd if you dont have one yet
A 5800X3D is a drop in replacement and would be a possibly large uplift, and cheap for what it is (presuming this is for gaming and you're not doing heavy productivity on the side, if you are then scrap that idea). Other than making that particular change, I probably wouldn't touch the CPU/platform right now as it would be a rather expensive cost for what extra gain you could get with the aforementioned upgrade. Other than if to change to a 5800X3D, wait until further down the road to change the platform.

For the GPU, from an RTX 2070 Super, there's definitely upgrade options, but you'd probably be looking at spending quite a bit, as you'd have to look towards the higher end stuff to get a worthwhile upgrade IMO. Whether that's worth it is up to you.

I would keep it as it is, making it better would cost too much. Sure you can use 5800X3D and RTX 4070 Ti or 4080 but like I said cost would be quite high.

I'm running an R9 3900X + 32GB DDR4 4000MHz RAM + RX 6900 XT as my 2nd rig, I see no problem retaining the CPU for gaming. A GPU upgrade would net the best uplift, assuming OP games at 1440P or higher.

If it's 1080P, the leave it as it is as there's not much to be gained with either a CPU or GPU upgrade, assuming OP gets high enough or high refresh rate gaming with his present hardware (with the games he play). Why recommend just nVidia? Though that seems to be the only /companycard peeps recommend around here, it can be an AMD card like an RX 6800/6800 XT/6900 XT/7900 XT (not including the RX 7900 XTX unless at MSRP) is pretty good.

I'd recommend the RTX 3080/3080 Ti, but they're usually priced higher than competing AMD RX 6000 cards. Heck, the RTX 3080may even be priced higher than the RX 7900XT, so it'd not be productive to even consider them. The RX 7900 XT 20GB at 800USD MSRP (PowerColor Hellhound RX 7900 XT at 804USD is hard to beat, like the RTX 4070 Ti....)

Again, I think nVidia is being rather stingy with VRAM, expecially on the RTX 4070 Ti, 12GB VRAM sound like planned obsolescence to me (in light of newer games eating up VRAM).

Its a perfectly fine setup for 1080p 120fps++

Overclock your rig, that could act as a temporary upgrade

Running at 1440p and as more games be starting to pull me down to them 60 fps at medium settings~ I'm thinking of an upgrade. the higher 30xx series cost more or less the same as a 4070ti/4080/ which costs more or less the same as 7900 xtx.
Someone told me a while ago that my cpu is trash hence why I'm considering getting a new one and later get an 50xx series. Not in a dire need of a upgrade but looking at what options I have in case i come across a good deal

Ok, first of all. Do not get pressured into an upgrade by other people.
Second of all. R9 3900X is not trash, someone saying that is either a troll or an elitist.
R9 3900X´s main weakness is single core score. It´s not bad at all but way lower than most of the new CPUs on the market can offer. And If you play at 60Hz, the R9 3900X has still got hell lot of headroom there.
Your rig is mostly fine. You might probably benefit most out of a GPU upgrade and yes, a really strong GPU upgrade might start showing the CPU as the weakness but unless you are chasing every frame, it´s a waste of money to change the CPU.

Yeah alright, currently jusy chasing some extra frames. Waiting till next year or year after to chase them all.
1440p@165hz but all I want is stutter free gaming at higher settings

That's stupid, if 1080p suits you why would you follow the trend like a stupid sheep and spend your money on something you don't really need... Unless of course you're a gen Z and all you have to do is ask mommy or daddy no matter what the cost of it. They will give it to you because you will throw a hissy fit if they don't.

1440p@165Hz is stupidly demanding.
You need like a 4080/4090 for that...
Not to mention a faster cpu...

Peeps have only nVidia in the minds when they talk about GPU, let's not forget the RX 7900 XT/XTX are capable of high framerate/refresh rate rasterize gaming at 1440P as well......
