And since I already spent a wad of cash on a PC that can also play games, why would I need a Steam Deck, too?
Because I want a full keyboard, mouse, and large screen? And don't care at all about "portability"?
(and I do other things besides "play game")
Personally, though, I absolutely think the Steam Deck is worth the money. It's a very cost effective way to get into PC gaming, which I was locked out of before buying one because it was too expensive. It was just a better deal for me then a gaming PC, I can game again because of it and I really like the mobility I have. But people are different, other people have other preferences, different economical constrains and all that. There is no one product to rule them all, people will value things differently.
Switch is good enough for me.
And the Steam Deck has a desktop mode where it becomes more like running Windows. It's optimized for the gaming mode, though.
To my understanding, it's not like a console in that it gets "better results for its performance level".
Why isn't everyone using consoles?
Why isn't everyone on laptops?
Why isn't everyone using phones?
A lot of people actually DO use those things, but not everyone. And you probably already get the point that those are three different things from one another, just as a Steam Deck is a forth, and a PC is yet another.
The Steam Deck offers great performance for its price, but it has tradeoffs. It's not well suited to all roles.
You have no upgrade path for the quad core CPU. Nor the GPU. I'm not sure about RAM. That alone makes it ill fit for many tasks, or people.
Workstation tasks? You're not serious?
You'll need the dock if you want a fixed ethernet connection, keyboard and mouse, and/or more than the included, small resolution display.
The Steam deck makes a GREAT compliment for portable gaming (sort of want one myself one day), or as a replacement for a low cost PC gaming device if you have low asks of it. It's GREAT for that. But it is FAR from an everything replacement.
A mid-range PC is many times more powerful than the Steam Deck.
Granted I normally play games that don’t require too much attention and real time feedback so I can play a bit and work, but I like the idea of a switch or deck if it has been a real intensive day. The last thing I want to do is keep sitting at a desk when I’ve been sitting at a desk all day, so being able to have dinner and lie down and play a handheld system has its benefits.
Plus, you can’t haul a pc if you’re on a long bus/train/car ride, so if you were driving a few hours and wanted to play a game, boom, there you go
I now have a pc at home and a cellphone and laptop when on the move, SD is probably very good but needed its not.
Because your games are tied to your Steam library, there is a huge catalog that won't go away if a newer version of the Steam Deck is released. You'll still be able to play all the old games and the new ones too.
