will i need to fiddle with my new setup to get it to allow windows 11?
I am on the cusp of upgrading my pc and was thinking of just upgrading my cpu and mobo but i decided im probably going to get ddr5 ram as well. Anyway, I am competent enough but no hardware expert.

I have narrowed it down between two motherboards I might get
MSI PRO Z790-A WiFi ProSeries Motherboard

ASUS Prime Z790-A WiFi 6E LGA 1700

The Asus one claims to be windows 11 ready from what I read.
However in a review of the MSI (the one I'm leaning towards) it says you need an extra 'tpm' module that doesnt come with it to get windows 11 to work? anyone know i would need to order that part as well? why would i need that?

I'm pretty sure the TPM 2.0 module is built into the CPU. A DDR5 compatible chip will definitely have this feature.

It should be as easy as just turning on the TPM setting in the BIOS.

I reckon that reviewer has no idea what he/she is talking about.

I'd go Asus just because for the cost of the motherboard it's disgusting to not have the TPM onboard and especially not having the added component included. Personally I detest Windows 11 but as 11 has been out long enough the TPM should be standard.

Thought that myself but looking at motherboard specs it has a TPM 2.0 header. Rather strange to have a header if it didn't need one. Not like any CPU the Z690 supports wouldn't support it. My 12th gen on a Z690 does, and no TPM header on the board

Both SHOULD have tpm 2.0 available to activate in the UEFI firmware. Annoyingly, though, if you search it, MSI's compatible boards w/11 lists only go up to the 500 series.

I mean: I would find it absurd if a 700 series only has a port for a physical tpm while my "old-fashioned" z390 board has both (I have a physical chip by choice).

BUT, I haven't come across anything (yet) that says: yes definitely, you can activate the firmware tpm on a 700 board!

I guess you can always contact MSI customer service or go to a local retailer with demos on display to ask.

Edit: I think it's mostly office machines from OEMs that include a physical tpm. The majority are enabled via UEFI.

Yeah I agree, I have an MSI B550 board and it supports UEFI tpm 2.0. I just can't imagine the Z790 board wouldn't, makes no sense.

MSI PRO Z690-A ddr5 version runs win 11. With a bios update via the bios flash button it can support 13 gen cpus. Z790 version might support slightly faster ddr5 speeds. Win 11 support is common for newer stuff.

Just an fyi you might need to download the network drivers for the z790 a pro on another pc or use the install cd/dvd. Windows installation media didn't have the network drivers when I tried it for the msi Z690 a pro a month or two ago.
