Ryzen 7 5800x on an MSI b450 gaming plus board
Is this a good combination? Been looking to upgrade my CPU after years of sticking to a ryzen 5 2600.

It should work just fine, make sure to update your BIOS before installing the new chip!
Update your BIOS.

Also, 5700X is better value, you lose ~5% performance but you're paying a bit less, and it has lower power consumption.

If you're using the stock cooler that came with the 2600, you'll need to get a decent air cooler as well, because the Wraith Stealth will not be sufficient.

Agree with the above, the 5800X makes sense if the cost is close to the 5700X but otherwise I'd choose the 5700X over it. Sometimes it's the case that the 5700X and 5800X are priced very similarly and sometimes it not. When it's not the case, you're better off forgetting the 5800X and going with either the 5700X or the 5800X3D instead.

Those two CPUs and the 5600 are sort the three main CPUs that matter on AM4 right now (5900X does as well to an extent, but NOT for gaming). The rest are generally outclassed by other options IMO.
Thank all of you for the replies, they're very informative and are definitely helping me decide.
Thanks to reply #2 specifically, as I wasn't aware I'd need a new cooler, so I'll look into that too.
Fortunately the offer for the 5800x I found is pretty good and only has a marginally higher price than the 5700x, so I think it's worth it to just go for it.
Well , i guess the thread is finished but wanna add an interesting fact - many old AMD AM4 mobos can handle Ryzen 5xxx processors perfectly without any performance loss .Great news ! Just a new BIOS is needed, eventually . As far as I remember , Toms Hardware tested it .

Still a waste to not be able to access PCI-e 4.0, which in very select instances can make quite a difference, though it's inconsequential in most. But nonetheless, you're paying for a CPU that supports it but you're not getting it, and in actual terms of how BIOS handles CPUs that are older than the BIOS version is intended for, you get reduced performance and stability with those chips, many users (including myself) experienced that as BIOS was kept up to date with Zen2 after Zen3 launched in 2020.

Tom's Hardware's claims are complete BS and too broad of a generalization, because not every board and BIOS combination is going to work correctly and there is a VERY sordid history with AM4 motherboard BIOS being consistent in terms of performance, there have been some awful AGESA updates, one of which took FOUR minor updates to fix for Zen+ CPUs after Zen2's launch (i.e. AGESA 1.0.0.x ABBA was the final fix for issues on Zen+ and Zen2)

Toms Hardware is the best tech site ! What are you talking about ? What i am trying to say is that all with old Ryzen mobos have high chance to upgrade to Ryzen 5xxx without mobo change and without losing performance .PCI-E Gen 3.0 x16 is enough up to date.

Tom's Hardware isn't the best tech site or tech journalist, GamersNexus is. Hell, even LTT is more reliable, and they're a meme at this point. Nobody can top Steve Burke's crew.

Not all older AM4 motherboards have proper support, and there is loss of performance and stability with older CPUs, it basically ruins that board's ability to be used effectively with an older chip, so if someone ends up with that board later but is using one of those older CPUs, they've lost a bit of the value in their deal. This exact freaking issue is why I don't use a Ryzen CPU anymore.

Whether you agree or not is irrelevant to me because I don't care what you personally think, I'm pointing out the actual facts that Tom's Hardware isn't even considering. AMD's BIOS is flawed because they keep extending support, Intel doesn't have that issue because they don't do stupid things like that, but they get grilled for it. It's not the manufacturer and board maker's job to make sure a motherboard will remain compatible for 5 years, AMD has frequently angered BIOS makers from partner companies because of this, it's extremely difficult to do what AMD demands of them, that's why it took so long for 300 series boards to get support for 5000 series at all. It's common sense among people who actually know what they're talking about.

@尺.し工几句ヨ尺
Me too , your person opinion/ blathering doesnt matter .

Intel changes the socket with every new generation, in general , but it s not good for old Intel processor owners .

edit
pointless to continue , unsubbed
