If you don't want to use wireless then ensure you connect it to usb via a data-sync cable rather then a charge-only cable.

Yes of course.
Then use a charge only cable. Not a data sync cable.

im limited on space. im going to buy a micro usb cable i remember years ago i connected my ps4 controller to my pc wired and it never blinked "yellow/orange" to identify it was charging. it just stayed white.

if they are on, they do not indicate if they are charging
i use a bank with displays to show charge current, to verify they are charging

This is really the better way. This way you can still put a good range between you and the PC while using it via Wireless.

It stores it can be difficult to know for sure if many of those cheap cables are charge only or not. I would suggest buying online as on most listings for products you search for on places like Ebay, Amazon, Newegg, Monoprice... they should be more detailed about the product.

Usually if the cable package doesn't say Data Sync specifically then it is most likely going to be Charge Only.

Yes if it handles data sync then it also charges.

Charge only cables are missing 2 internal wires that would handle the data connection.

officeworks, had a 1m micro usb cable and in the description it said "charging" supported when connected to a usb. there was nothing special with the cable it just looks like a normal cable

Yes you usually can not tell just by looking at the cable.

thanks. i generally charge my ps4 controller with my travel adopter in wall socket. the difference is it emits a yellow/orange light to say its charging but i remember years ago i put a micro usb cable from my ps4 controller to pc and no lights were emitted i didn't know if it charges while wired only showed the white/blue light to say its on why?

Most likely because when you connected it to the PC, this was a Data Sync Cable which triggers the Controller to come on and stay on since it's then connected as a Wired Device; as if the controller was hard-wired.
