Steam Link app bad fps on android tv but ok on PC?
I have an old sharp aquos android tv where I play steam games via steam link app. Tv is connected using ethernet (100mbps). My steam host pc has core i5 4670 with a gtx 1650 low profile and 16 GB of ram also connected using ethernet (1000mbps). I have a GB switch and a GB router for reference. Running a network test on Steam Link app gets me up to 100mbps.

I noticed that when I play (Horizon Zero Dawn) on the PC, I get a consistent 60 fps@1080p on Original Settings. But when I play on my tv, the fps drops down to about 30-40fps and it also increases input lag.

If I set the setting the Display on HZD to 720p on Favor Performance on the PC and set the Steam App to Limit resolution to 720p as well, I no longer notice any lag.

I would like to know:

Will upgrading my GPU help me get a consistent 60 fps@1080p on the android tv via steam link?

Do I need to upgrade the CPU as well?

How about the TV? Will getting a new android tv like the Mi Box S help as well? I figured since the tv is old, it's hardware might no longer be enough.

Thanks.

Is hardware encoding enabled?

Yes. Both server and client.
post the streaming log

I can't seem to paste it here. Too big.

I posted it in pastebin instead.

check the link app settings, make sure the display res is set to 1080p
1080i is 30hz not 60

and 18-35ms to encode sounds very high, make sure gpu encoding is enabled
steam -> settings -> remote play -> host options -> tick hardware, amd, nvidia, intel (and nvbfc if you have an nvidia gpu)

I have already set the steam link app display res to 1080p. Although I switch it to 720p sometimes to get better performance.

As for the host, I have all the 3 checkboxes (amd, nvidia and intel) already checked originally. Though the nvbfc is not available even though I have an nvdia gpu.

You have i5 4670, which means you should have an iGPU, so l recommend to uncheck Intel and AMD

And NBFC is not encoder, it is API for desktop capture. NVENC is NVIDIA's hardware encoder.

use the nv capture method and untick amd/nvidia gpu encoding, so it uses the intel hd to encode
"AvgEncodeMS" "14.5305509567260742"
"StdDevEncodeMS" "8.60616493225097656"

Try the iGPU.

Horizon Zero Dawn:
"AvgFPS" "55.4124565124511719"
"StdDevFPS" "23.9140720367431641"

Shadow of the Tomb Raider:
"AvgFPS" "58.298004150390625"
"StdDevFPS" "14.4790706634521484"

That's not a consistent 60.
how about in desktop mode or less demanding games
may be cpu too weak to keep up

Your PC is much to weak to stream most games. Your specs are barely good enough to run the games in question

It works well with "A Plagues tale Innocence".

I believe it might be the cpu too. Maybr even thr gpu is weak too. What CPU and GPU would you recommend? I do have plans to upgrade next year.

I would like to be able to play upcoming games like The witcher 4, Forspoken, The last of us. I'm happy with 60fps@1080p on Ultra to High settings.

Thanks.

a new i3 is better than the 4th gen i5

but go for an 10gen or later i5 or i7 if you can
or ryzen 5xxx or better
will also need new mobo and ram, should toss in a nvme ssd while at it

Unfortunately I have not been successful in forcing the iGPU to be the encoder even if I uncheck the AMD and NVDIA. It goes to software encoding (using 3 threads) instead of iGPU.
Cause you can't really use Intel GPU Encoding with an Intel GPU that old.
