Does the RTX 4080 needs the special cable adapter?
Hi everyone,

I've been considering to buy an RTX 4080, but I've read that the 4090 needs a special cable adapter. Does the 4080 needs this adapter too? That default adapter runs in a lot of problems since it can burns out the GPU and if the 4080 needs it too I think I'll pass.

You are drawing conclusions that have been proven to not be true, the cause of the melting cables is known. The issue has been investigated by Nvidia, GamersNexus, and many others. The adapter cable is perfectly fine. I haven't seen a single new reported case since Nvidia came out and said the issue was caused by not fully seating the plug.
Some leaked benchmark figures are coming in, looks like the RTX 7900XTX would sit squarely between the RTX 4080 and RTX 4090 in performance.....rasterize performance that is. For RT, no figures yet, though it's rumored to be a gen behind, now similar to high end RTX 3000 series.

is just 1 to 1. Before when you upgraded you got 25% improvement for around the same price thus more for your money making it worthwhile.

Bottom line is unless you absolutely need the performance and can afford it you money is better spent elsewhere

Literally one of the only games the rtx 4080/4090 does better than the 7900xt or 7900xtx in is cyberpunk

If you want to play cyberpunk forever and have a 1.3x higher electrical bill, then buy the 4000 series

If you want minimal difference, less cost, and a better electrical bill, go AMD

They had dozens of cables from various manufacturers some with metal burrs on the pins, plating scraped off, metal fragments in the plastic, not a single one of those cables melted. The only time a cable melted was when it wasn't plugged in properly.

I actually own a Strix 4090 and the adapter that came with it is as well made as any other cable in my pc. I have about $7,000 invested in my pc there is no way I would risk it over a cable if I was even remotely concerned that it would fail.

That's good to know. Considering that this is a thing related with the insertion of the new adapter, then maybe it's not very intuitive to do? The normal GPU cables have a little flange to indicate where exactly you have to push. I've noticed that the new adapter cables didn't have this.

It has a retention clip like other cables, it may not be visible depending on the gpu brand. Some put it on top and some on the bottom. It doesn't have as audible a "click" as some other plugs but if you fully seat the plug and make sure the retention clip is engaged you'll be fine.

I've had a 4090 since launch. I used the adapter for about a week until my ATX 3.0 power supply was delivered. No issues, but I made sure my cable was fully seated into the gpu. I saw that. Maybe it'll be worth it but AIB cards still won't be worth the money. Maybe the FE cards but I wouldn't pay 1300 for an aftermarket 4080.

Does the curvature of the cable affect on something? (When you plug it in and it is not really pronounced).

The curve of the cable might pull the pins slightly out of the connector when its moved etc if it isnt fully seated/clipped into the connector
