Just really quickly to answer the question: I like gorhill's (the uBO developer) no-nonsense approach to Life in general, he has zero tolerance for BS anywhere and he stands on his principles. Based on some questions on another forum, he benchmarked uBO and found that you can have half a million list entries and your machine's performance should not be impacted.
Not everyone is a fan, though, and I respect that.
Going back to my earlier contention that many roads lead back to the big tech firms--today, I got a link in my email to a review I posted on another site. Normally, that link will take me right there but this time, it was blocked by my filter list--oisd basic. Why? Because now, Amazon is hosting the domain.
You read about these tech firms laying off people by the thousands. They're not hurting, though. I suspect it's to preserve the unreal profit margin these guys enjoy. Times are tough, boo hoo.
Edited for typo and to clarify some text.
Surprised you seemed averse to answer though.
Not averse to answering anything really. Just got around to this topic again.
I mean: use whatever. Just be cautious downloading anything that has "offers" bundled within the installer. Like this Ad Muncher, which might also solicit for donations. As long as you know the deal beforehand.
I don't follow these people or entities so outside of hearing of the outcry that Adblock Plus was accepting payments from donation companies some years back (which didn't sit right with me), I'm in the dark as to what's what. I told myself I'd stay with Adblock Plus despite the outcry (because sometimes outcry is a big fuss over what amounts to little) as long as it kept working well, and it has for me. I don't see donation nags. I don't see many, if any, ads that aren't on websites I have whitelisted to begin with. It's been the same for me.
I don't really mind programs offering other stuff in their installer (Chrome had itself put into everything ever to help boost its popularity). As long as it's optional, and if it helps pay for what is often a free product, whatever.
I don't mind donation requests. A lot of this stuff does, at least partially, rely on this. It's when it becomes obtrusive that it's an issue.
