Power off the system; unplug main power cable from back of PSU.

Re-install GPU and any required GPU/VGA cables from PSU to GPU card.
VGA#1 and any extra "VGA #" from PSU to your GPU card.

Ensure the GPU is being inserted properly, and flush with the Case Slot and Motherboard PCIE slots; this is a rather large/heavy GPU, so please secure to the case slot with minimum of 1x screw prior to power-on.

Then re-attach main power cable, try powering on the system once again.

Boots up with the gpu installed. Now I assume I just need to reattach the sata cables to the psu and I'll be Good to go?

Update: turns out once I plug my ssd (boot drive) into the psu it does the clicking thing again with a quick flash from the led's. Odd behavior.

double check where you plugged the modular cable for the ssd into the psu
make sure its on one labeled for molex/sata

yeah check connections to the ssd drive clicking usually means OL protection (scp, ovp, ocp) which are all controlled by OL contacts that switch to open on OL making a click and opening circuit

I think it's the cable, I use some from the old psu and they're probably not compatible. Also I can't thank you guys enough. I've been able to make more progress here than I would have ever made futzing around on my own.

happy to report that i am typing this from my now alive and kicking desktop. turns out the cables i was using for my sata devices were incompatible with the new psu and tripping some sort of internal breaker, which was the clicking. thanks again to all who helped and put up with my sometimes ignorant self.

turn off the overclock on that board, you will kill its vrms

970A-G46 4+1 Yes 125W Avoid for 8-cores, OC
Agreed you dont want to OC on VRMs with no heatsink cooling, and that board I suspect has none......

It has VRM headsinks:

However that is not usually the issue, the issue is being a 4+1 Phase VRM; this is not good for any OC'ing. You want 8+2
