CPU Issue all of a sudden?
Hey guys, I have a NVIDIA GeForce GTX 970 with an Intel Core i5-4460 Processor, and an ASRock H97M Pro4 mobo. I have been having performance issues in my games the past few weeks, where physics seems to be an issue: stuttering in Rocket League, Dota 2 loads pretty slowly, AC Syndicate can't load environment quickly enough when riding a horse carriage, so the game actually freezes and loads some more envrionment and starts back up again every few seconds. Here is my 3DMark benchmarking page: http://www.3dmark.com/3dm/11492544 . As you can see, it seems to definitely be a CPU issue. It happened really suddenly over a day. Can abybody diagnose this as definitely a CPU issue or maybe something else? Thanks! Also, I bought and made my build in December of 2014, so its under a year and a half old.

yeah those combined and physx scores are much lower than they should be graphics scores are about normal... ive got a fx-8320@4ghz gtx 970 which is tied with the 4460 on 3d-mark 11,3dmarkn graph when i run the test... your much too low what are your temps first off??

edit: you should be real close to that oculous rift recommended bar (i5 4590 3.3,gtx 970)
im right under it you should be as well

yes CPU is weak for 970

anyways.... what are the temperatures of cpu and motherboard?? you can monitor this wth hwinfo (free download) or another program if you have one.. your cpu is not running right

if the cpu is hitting 90-100c its throttling
replace the thermal paste or get a tx3 for the 4460

No it's not, that is wrong info. It's likely that he has an overheated CPU and installed the CPU cooler wrong in which case he needs new CPU paste.

by the way its bottleneck

haswell i5 is no bottleneck for the gtx970

yea even most i3 are fine with a GTX 970 folks. Learn...

Your games prefetching in-game data too slow? Put it on SSD. Dont have SSD, well then your whole system is slow, get one.

With IT systems, if a problem suddenly appears it is because something changed e.g. something extra has been loaded or updated or something has broken.

Passmark will benchmark your pc and rate each component against other pc's of same config. If you run this when pc is running normally and keep the ratings, they can always be referred to later to see if something has slowed down.

MSI Afterburner will show what is happening in real-time on screen - temperatures, fps, loads for each core. (Config guide on youtube).

The GTX970 won't be an issue. It will just run at less than 100%. It doesn't affect the cpu performance. Where it could screw up is the 3.5 GB memory issue. Afterburner should show if the memory usage goes over 3.5GB.

Possible issues - NVIDIA drivers, bios settings changing when pc crashed, virus (run malwarebytes), HDD errors, some other process running, Steam client (try playing when offline), Windows 10 updates.

Yeah I don't agree with YesBoss

because my cpu hasn't been bottlenecking over the past year (although it definitely is now). I will try out PassMark and the temperature software. To answer some questions, I don't think its a Steam Issue because Star Citizen and BF4 have crapped out as well, all my games are on SSD, and haven't had loading issues until now. Also, what BIOS settings should I be looking at? Thanks everyone!

Here is my PassMark data :( http://www.passmark.com/baselines/V8/display.php?id=59642400672 . Looks crap.

run the test again but use something like HWMonitor to monitor temps and cpu clockspeed while its running i suspect possible overheating

The Passmark score for a i5-4460 should be 6621. You got 1439 which is lower than the single-core score of 1948. So whatever is wrong is cpu (or mobo) related.

(Also, in the My Baselines menu there is an option to search the passmark database for comparable systems (free for 30 days after installing the software). Keep this in mind when problem is fixed.)

i5-4460 stats:
http://www.cpubenchmark.net/cpu.php?cpu=intel+core+i5-4460+%40+3.20ghz&id=2230

-------

So as Alex says, check cpu temps.

CPU-Z in the bench menu can stress test the cpu and show the results on screen. If you open HWMonitor side by side you can see the temps, clock speed, % utilisation, cpu fan speed.

--------

In my bios (ASUS mobo) there is a menu option to reset everything to defaults. I'd try that as it only takes a minute or two.

I would also remove the cpu, memory, SSD etc and reseat them, and any plug-in cables. I'd do the cpu and memory first.

post a cpuz validation link
http://www.cpuid.com/softwares/cpu-z.html
cpuz -> validate button -> submit button
it will open a browser, copy the url (address) and paste it here

and reset bios to defaults and try again

The Passmark memory score is DDR2 level, so a memory stick might be loose or failing.
