Will a smaller graphics card fit into a large case?
I've done some mesuring on my rig to prepare it for it's new graphics card. The card's 7 inches long and the pc is 17 inches long. Will I have any problems? I know this may be vague, but this is my first time putting anything in a store bought and I'm to lazy and scared to open up the thing and to measure. I know I'm going to be sticking the card into something else other than the PCI slot. I think. I may just be fearful of a non-existent problem.

The card is a EVGA GeForce GT 740 4GB Superclocked (Single Slot)

yes you can use a smaller card in the pc no problem.. as long as it has the right bracket ex low profile for sff pc and regular for desktop pc (matx, atx mid/full)

@Fluffy What do you mean? Everything checks out, the PCI works with the card and such, I just need a new PSU.

if its a 7inch card it prolly has regular pci bracket so dont worry about it most smaller cards come with both pci brackets... yes if its a half decent gpu you will need a new psu depending on gpu and psu

@Fluffy I believe it does have two brackets. It's a GT 740 (I'm on a budget, and I totally ♥♥♥♥♥♥ up when I bought it but I must make do with what I have.)
Here is the card.

yeah you should have went with the ddr5 version much faster.. and no way that card can use 4gb ddr3 but anyways if you have it and cant return it.. its a 64w card about the same as 750ti so if you have a decent 300w ps it will run without power upgrade

@Fluffy Thanks! I can't recall what the PSU wattage was. I have not purchased any kind of PSU yet, I'll have Geek Squad take a look at it and have them determine if I need a new PSU. I think I do need one as the reccomended wattage is over 400. Is there any kind of issues that could arise with a new PSU? Like it not being compatible with some parts?

no there all compatible as long as you get standard atx ps if your case is a standard desktop... the requirements for power are different for every video card manufacturer and are higher than needed to account for lower end power supplys and high tdp computers like 125w+ cpus etc..
its not required if you have 300w+ power supply but will allow more headroom for future upgrades

@Fluffy My computer model is a Inspiron 3847. When I cleaned it out it looked like it was well equipped to have a nice and tasty graphics card slapped in it.
Fluffy Apr 2, 2016 @ 1:32pm
yeah so its a mini tower matx so that gpu will work fine and the power supply will be standard atx but the specs i saw if its the intel i3 version say it should have a 300w power supply
S.Clogg Apr 2, 2016 @ 1:34pm
@Fluffy It's actually an i5 and not a mini tower. I believe it would have more watts and I assume the GPU would work fine. Thanks. (Full specs on my profile)

By MiniTower, Fluffy means MicroATX; which that Dell model is in fact:
As u can see here:

What GPU we talking about here though?
That Dell PSU is junk, can't handle much, maybe GTX 750 max.
And not a good idea to put "gaming class" GPU in these, as you have no cooling/airflow in these cases. Best bet, buy a standard MicroATX or Mid-Tower ATX Case and an ATX Power Supply; then transfer the parts from this Dell to the new case.

Yes, I am going to get a new PSU but nothing extreme. I'm getting a GT 740.
I don't believe I will have problems with heat though. The thing is relatively cool and sits in a cool spot with lots of ventilation. Also, sorry I didn't know it was a mini tower.

i believe your system is fine if your just getting a gt 740 although i will warn you that gpu isn't made for gaming

I know. I'm stuck with it. I was on a 100 dollar budget. My friend also has the same card and runs newer games just fine so It seems it will do the trick. (He has the GT 740 and 16 gigs of Ram where I have an Intel 4600 and 8 gigs of ram.)

Your motherboard is likely ATX or Micro ATX sized and as such is 9.6 inches and any card that size or smaller will fit with the exception that sometimes harddrives can protrude back and block the card. Nowdays most cases have side mounted HDDs that do not protrude back because they are sideways. Also most cases that do not have this still have multiple slots so you can move the offending HDD to a higher or lower slot to get it out of the way.

For $100 you should buy a R7 360 instead of the GT 740.
