Athlon II X4 640 -> Pentium G4400 ? Or wait till afford i3.
So, I was looking at Skylake and was wondering if I could get by with a Pentium as an upgrade from the Athlon II X4 640 with a motherboard for around $120 ?

Or should I just wait till I can drop the $120 on the CPU only (IE: i3's ) . I'm gonig to assume the i3 probably would be a better option for gaming ?

Just a thought, pick up a used x4 965be or x6 1090t drop in upgrade it's not like he's using a gtx980ti the gpu is still going to be a gtx950.

Even the 880k isn't too bad with the gtx980 ^ 1080p.

Intel Gs have become pointless in todays gaming ^, for intel i3 6100 min.

G4400 ^ ya it's a cheap cpu and it shows.

Ya dropping in a used x6 phenom would be better than a Pentium G.

Used aka previously owned.

Join some PC forums put some WTBs out there, sell the x4 640 for $20-$30 if you find a x4 965/x6 1090t.

Is it worth $50-60 though with the pentium skylake being $60 ?

You seem to have made up your mind to go intel.

My advice to you is get the i3 6100 with a z170 board and 2666mhz ddr4 ram if you don't have the $$$ now wait until you do, do it right this time and stay away from the mediocre hollyhobbie/office cpus like the G4400.

Ya but you can get a used 955 Black Edition for only $60~ from Amazon!
http://www.amazon.com/AMD-HDZ955FBGMBOX-Phenom-3-2GHz-Retail/dp/B002TQYUAE/ref=sr_1_5?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1459619800&sr=1-5&keywords=phenom+x6

Overclock that and it should be a big improvement and tide you over till you can save for a i5, i7 AMD FX 8 core or one of the upcoming AMD Zen CPUs.

Also can get a Phenom II x6 1055T for $90~ used on Amazon:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/offer-listing/B003FVNC0Q/ref=dp_olp_used?ie=UTF8&condition=used

Going to need a CPU cooler for it also, here's a basic cheap & capable one:
Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO 82.9 CFM Sleeve Bearing CPU Cooler
http://pcpartpicker.com/part/cooler-master-cpu-cooler-rr212e20pkr2
OutletPC $34.29 -$10.00 $24.29+
$10.00 mail-in rebate
Newegg $29.49 -$5.00 +FREE s/h In stock $24.49
$5.00 mail-in rebate

Again I think this will last longer than a PG 4400 and you can re-use the CPU cooler for later.

How hard is those after market coolers to put on ? The stock one was just press down on each side, swing it over..
i will say this 1.5v ram will work with skylake you just run the risk of damaging the mobo due to the high voltage
Noodles 2 abr. 2016 às 17:24
Your DDR3 Ram can work for Haswell but for the most bang for your dollar wait until you can afford the Core I5 4670k, it's more future proof then a Pentium or a I3. If you must go for Skylake, then be prepare to spend more. Skylake is faster but you need faster DDR4 and a Z170 Motherboard to see it's true power.

Also if you only a small boost of CPU power, your motherboard with the Athlon X4 640 should be able to support a cheap FX 8320E/FX 6350 or even a cheap Phenom II X6. Keep that in mind as well. It's no Skylake but a FX CPU does have a sighter easier time with games than the old X4 640

Aftermarket cooler usually requires putting on a new backplate and afixing it with screws intead of the press down or clamp on stock coolers. You may need to remove the motherboard to do this outside your case and thus you should also remove the GPU, RAM and anything else stuck to the motherboard just for safety. So it's technically easy but time consumingly hard.

You don't have a choice though, you need a cooler for 125W to 140W for one of those Phenom IIs and ideally you need some overclocking headroom on top of that as well.

Your current stock cooler is unlikely to be enough so you can't just re-use it.
Fluffy 2 abr. 2016 às 17:32
the 212 evo has a backplate but there are many tower coolers out there that perform the same and use the retention clip..

The stock AM3 setup ?
Fluffy 2 abr. 2016 às 18:21
yes there are many that clip right in to the stock clip retention

for example i use this one on my fx 8320@4ghz
http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835856005

they use more pressure to moint but still just push down with thumb tab into the clip

(its a canadian site but like i said there is many coolers that have the same clip artic cooling as well)
