Help with ps4 controller and ds4 windows

I have a dell inspirron with intel 530 graphics, i5-6400, 12gb ram, windows 10 os. I want to build a new gaming pc but wanted to get a feel for how steam works.

I downloaded ds4windows drivers and attached a micro usb to the ps4 controller, then connected to steam big picture. the controller showed up as wired 360 controller in steam and device manager. In ds4 windows it showed up as numbers and colons (not actual code but example d8:ee:6i:23). I have downloaded and played borderland 2 for a few hours with mouse/keyboard no problem. when the ps4 controller connected it was functional but there was no audio on the pc at all. Unplugged the controller and the sound returned. tried installing the drivers again and now device manager, steam, and ds4 wont recognize the controller.

Is there some other driver that i need to make this function?


Edit: I went back to device manager and the hdi-game device and xbox controller drivers were disabled. Once enabled the ps4 controller was recognized but the same issue with the audio remains. I was even watching youtube with the controller attached and there was no audio at all.

Because DS4Windows sucks, for real. Try SCPToolkit. I've my DS3 and DS4 controllers working both via USB and BT flawlessly with SCP drivers.

Thanks ill give that a try. so far i closed ds4 and steam recognized my controller as a ps4 controller and i was able to get audio through the cheap earpiece that came with my ps4. its just irritating that i cant use my surround sound.

You can rightclick your sound icon bottom right of the screen, press "Open Sound settings" and choose whatever output you want. Windows just uses the latest sound device u've plugged in unless you specify some exact device. This is just a quality of life thing, like you plug in your headphones when everyone goes to sleep and it switches to headphones automatically. DS4 is a sound device as well, so that's it.
Either way Steam does support DS4 and lets u reconfigure it per-game for games that are not compatible with DS4, so you can just stick to that. Or you can go SCP way, it just sends your DS4 inputs to virtual X360 controller, essentially what you've been trying to do with DS4Windows. Install the SCP Toolkit and use SCP Driver Installer to specify which exact device is your DS4 (mine's called Wireless Controller), then install the driver. Takes a minute and works like forever. It can also install DS3/DS4-compatible driver for a bluetooth dongle, and there's an auto-pairing option in SCP Settings Manager in case you often reconnect your controller to other PCs or PlayStation consoles.

If using DS4Windows you need to make sure DS4Windows is loaded before Steam. A DS4 Controller doesn't need to be connected but it needs to loaded. Also need to make sure the Hide DS4 options is set in DS4Windows options. If you don't They fight for control of the DS4.

As for sound thats because the DS4 can be used for Audio and when it's connected windows is making it the active audio output device. Go into audio properties and disable the DS4 as an Audio device and it'll never be switched to in the future

So did I until I wanted to connect other BT devices. As SCP takes complete control of the BT adaptor that wasn't possible. Provided OP has no need for other BT devices then SCP is fine. If they want/need to connect other BT devices then DS4Windows would be the better option

You're right, I should've mentioned that. I personally did buy a BT dongle for around $8 just for the controllers I have, as I really liked the plug'n'play SCP drivers give. I press the PS button on a controller or plug it via USB and it just works. Definitely a thing to have in case of bragging in front of console players.

Could you explain where the audio properties are located to disable DS4?

I went to app volume and device preferences and setthe steam out put to my display. However, with DS4 and boarderland 2 open neither display or earpiece provide audio. I cant find any audio settings in DS4.

Type in "Device Manager" in windows search. "Sound, video and game controllers". Find the audio device associated with DS4, right click, disable device.
OR
Rightlick the sound icon on taskbar, "Open Sound settings", a blue line "Manage sound devices". Find DS4 sound output, click it, "Disable".
