Not getting the right amount of mbps.
So a few days ago, my family got the new AT&T gigapower. My dad's macbook can get around 200 Mbps. I have an Asus USB - N53 and I am only getting around 40 mbps. I should be getting 300 Mbps. Anyone know the problem? I have all my drivers installed.

I'd personally advise against using USB 2.0 WiFi adapter, as those can be pretty limited. Last one I had really limited my connection speed greatly.

If anything, you should really get a good PCI-E/Mini PCI-E networking card if you have a slot available for it. Or at least a USB 3.0 adapter if you can't do that.

run a cable
5GHz AC band, probably the only way it's going to happen. I've got Comcast's 400Mb/s line, running into my overclocked and modded AC68U, technically it void FCC regulations by the higher db power output, but It can push 300Mb/s over wifi to my upstairs behind 4 walls. I'd reccomend a router you could install Tomato, or DD-WRT on-- then set it up as a client bridge. A router catching a signal is going to be far faster than any USB dongle.
Ah okay thanks.
Asus USB - N53 supports both 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz

Connect to the 5Ghz WiFi SSID and then try a retest with both these sites:
PingTest.net
SpeedTest.net

Do them in either IE or Firefox

For USB adapters; they are just poor, they are no where near as strong as most Laptops; since Laptops tend to have a PCIE MiniCard plus a really long / strong antenna compared to any USB type WiFi Adapter.

If you are using the USB WiFi Adapter on a Desktop, use a USB extension cable between USB port and Adapter so you can get the adapter well away from the Desktop & Power Supply (or other Wireless Devices)
Alright. My dad said that we could run an ethernet cable from our router to my room so that would be good.
Don't use DD-WRT, use Merlin. My PC is connected to a Netgear R7000 running Asus-Merlin firmware as a media bridge that connects to a R8000 main router via 11 AC 5G. I get over 400 mbps on my 500 mpbs connection via Wi-Fi.

In this little test, Steam DL peaks at 54.7 MB/s which is 437.6 mpbs:

_I_ 28 mai 2016 la 14:50
100ft cat5e or cat6 cable = $20
box of rj45 ends = $10-15
rj45 crimper $15-30
toolless keystone rj45 jacks and wall plate = $5 each
I hooked up a cat5e 100 foot ethernet cable from my computer to my router a few days ago and I got around 900 MBPS.
