Gaming Laptop? Lenovo Y700.
Hello, I was wondering what is a good gaming laptop for about $1000? I have my eye on the 17" Lenovo y700. The specs seem good, and I want a nice big screen. I was wondering what the hive mind thinks about this option, or is there a better way to go?

Are you sticking to a laptop or would you be willing to get a desktop? Otherwise look on a site like Cyberpower and build a laptop for your pricerange

What games are you planning to play on it and how long do you plan on keeping it?

I've been through about 6 "gaming laptops". They never last and you'll end up tossing it sooner than you will taking it apart and upgrading. (Some require special tools to break apart the glue and sealers that hold the mobo in, etc. It can be an absolute nightmare). I never gamed enough away from home to warrant the price of them vs what I could have built.

If you visit newegg, tigerdirect, amazon, and youtube, you can build a powerhouse of a desktop compared to what you will get buying a "gaming laptop". Just my opinion.. Good luck.

Honestly, that's a pretty nice laptop for the price. If you can splurge an extra ~$100 you could get a Sager machine with a GTX 970M. Which is quite a substantial upgrade (almost double).

If you don't mind a 15.6" machine you could get this:
http://www.xoticpc.com/sager-np7258-clevo-n155rf-eta-jan-29th.html
And up that GPU from a 960M to a 965M, there is about a 25% boost there graphics wise keeping all else the same.

BTW, you will see a 90% bias towards building a PC unless you go to NBR. That's the way it's always been. At the end of the day, I've built (Yes built) dozens notebooks that have desktop and beyond performance. Having the ability to just move around, whether that be in bed, the couch, or to school/work is so satifying. Just saying, don't let them talk you out of it--if it's something you're interested in. Of the hundreds of desktops i've built for myself and my company, I always got bored with them being these big boxes under the desk. High performance laptops have always been about pushing the boundries of Performance and Efficiency. Most desktop hardware has historically been influenced by the mobile counterparts.

The hassle of managing a large desktop station is something I am hoping to avoid. I am almost never home. I dont expect miracles. My macbook will play a few things but I just wish I had more power when I have the time to play. It doesnt have to be the best ever.

If it can handle new titles on medium settings, that's fine.

Thanks, ill look at this and do some reasearch. Looks like sager is a great option, and I love the custom options.

A 965M should be able to push just about anything at High settings at 1080P. Or the 970M shold be able to max out any current title at 1080P. At the end of the day, you can always overclock by the free +135Mhz nvidia allows via MSI afterburner.

But yeah, just do the research. If building your own strikes your fancy, you can get a Barebones MSI/Sager on eBay for like ~$700 then just get the CPU/RAM/HDD and slap it all together (Easy as a desktop). I built mine from a barebeones with a 970M/i7/16GB for just under ~1000 that way.

This one I found is pretty good for $1000, you can also customize it if you wish to make it cheaper or upgrade a little bit http://www.cyberpowerpc.com/system/Fangbook_4_SX6-100_Gaming_Laptop

Went with the fangbook 17.3":
8gb DDR4,
GTX 970M,
736 Gigabytes of SSD storage,
i7-6700HQ processor,
For $1262.90.

Hope it works out well. Thanks for the help.
