Good Gaming Router?
Hello,

I current own a TP-LINK N600 and it's just horrible. It consistently drops out if a new device joins the network and the UI/Firmware is just painful to both use and interpret. I have recently updated the firmware which didn't really improve anything

I looking for a suitable replacement. My Criteria:

- Good UI/Firmware. Easy to interpret and to manage clients.
- At least 4 x Gigabit Ethernet Ports
- 2.4/5ghz wireless (not for gaming so much, more media streaming)
- USB 3 ports (preferably 2) for network storage printers etc
- Can be wall mounted (not a deal breaker but still preferred).
- Doesn't require port forwarding for simple stuff like Xbox live(unlike my current router).

Obviously the lower the price the better. But I would happily shell out $200 if it solved my issues.

Thanks

What ISP and Modem do you have though; many overlook their modem, as this very well could also be hindering the entire setup.

As for Game Consoles (Xbox/PlayStation) those really should never be of any issues if the Router supports and has UPnP Enabled. Game Consoles rely on such a feature so the game console can push those needed ports just for its device through the Router; the Router should auto-allow this to occur from a UPnP device without any extra configurations needed.

Look at what these brands offer; and look at go above the $200 range if u want any good options; especially more than one USB port.

- ASUS
- DLink
- Linksys / Cisco

The majority of my Gaming is on PC. As for my ISP, Telstra (Australia). And UPnP in enabled on my router.

Wireless standards are being updated so frequently, that spending 300 bucks on a router that will be outdated in a year is beyond pointless. You don't need a gaming router in order to have great performance. In fact, since gaming routers are such a niche market, you end up getting worse reliability out of them in most cases. Just purchase any Wireless AC router from Netgear or Linksys. You'll save 100 bucks and get identical reliability, if not better.

The Linksys WRT1200AC is a widley available option that almost everyone agrees is excellent.
Well yea, like I said, Linksys is one of the brands to look at. I surely wouldn't buy based around "oh look at this router, it's great for gaming" as that is just marketing BS.

Yes 1200 or 1900 AC from Linksys are both great. And have open-source firmware you can edit and/or easily update.
The WRT1200AC is $300+ router in my Country. Whatever price you are paying in the states, our Gov/Retailers likes to mark things up by at least half the price again when it comes to electronic goods (and most other things).
Lol wow; yea even the 1900AC in under $200 USD in US

Well like I said, AUS then u can not expect to buy nice Router below $200; it just not gonna happen. Your best bet there is look for the Netgear (I forget the exact model) but it's rather large (like the Linksys 1900 or those new ASUS ones); anyways it has eSATA port on right side; 2x USB 3.0 ports on left side. That is decent one.
