FX 8350 or i5 4590 for 3D Rendering and Gaming?
First of all, sorry for my english.

Currently, i have a PhII x6 but its a little old and i wanna send it to its retirement.
So, i was searching trough the internet and i came up with this two choices. I read that the FX is good for rendering but not so much for gaming and that the i5 is very good for gaming but not that good for rendering. But also i read that, actually, the i5 can be good for rendering.

The thing is that i already have a mobo for the FX but not for the i5, so i will have to buy a new mobo if i choose de i5. The price of this two processors is almost the same in my country and the mobo for the intel is kinda cheap.

So, i am not sure which one i should pick. In the near future, i wanna do rendering as much i do gaming.

Any words will be appreciated.

sorry, my rig

Rendering will favor more cores, while gaming will favor more power per core.

In this comparison, the 8350 would be better at rendering but the 4590 will be better at games. Take into account that the difference will be negligable, unless you are on strick timeframes and need to do back-to-back projects with no time to spare... which if you were in a professional environment like that, you should be getting a better CPU than either of these in the first place.

I'd recommend looking at different CPUs all together. Budget?

An i7-4790 is better in both. A Xeon E3-1231 v3 is a cheaper option; it's a workstation/server CPU built for 3D rendering, but also works well in games.

your pii x6 is as good as fx 8350 for rendering and gaming

fx module design is slower per core performance since 2 cores share l2 cache and fpu

if you want a cheap rendering cpu go for a xeon e3-1231-v3
its basically a locked 1150 i7 with its igp disabled

this is not quite true but they are close the 8350 still beats the 1090t(3.2ghz) but barely.. if you oc the 1055t(2.8ghz) it will be the same or better than 8350.. theres not much difference in gaming and rendering between 8350 and i5 4590.. i would stick with the cpu u have now and oc which the 990fx can handle with a good cpu cooler

if you upgrade go bigger or you wont notice much of any difference

Buy intel xeon processor and new mobo, sell the stuff you currently have.

Xeon is basically just an i7 without the hyperthreading and for the price of an i5.

Xeon is designed for high powered servers and workstations. They are the highest end Intel processors and are mostly pretty expensive.

Xeons are often associated with servers and high end workstations, however there are also Xeons for the mainstream LGA 1150 socket.

These are the Xeon E3-1230 V3, Xeon E3-1231 V3, etc. They are essentially i7 CPUs, but without the onboard graphics that no-one ever needs anyway. But they are also usually cheaper than i7s as well.

First of all, thank you for your answers

Yes, i understand what are you saying; that is exactly what i found on the web but i don't know what other choice should i be looking for. Any CPU in mind?

I just research a little and there is very few xeon processors to choose on my country and they are a little expensive. So, probably i will be saving more money and looking options in other markets outside my country.

And because of that, i think maybe i will try to OC my pii

currently, i have a Hyper Plus 212 for the CPU. It will be good if i try some OC?

Thank you all.

the board is good for overclocking the pii x6 with a 212evo
just make sure you mount the fan low so it moves air over the vrm area on the mobo

I'd buy a good CPU cooler and maybe a case fan and overclock your Phenom II x6 for now.

If you are really set on the upgrade I'd suggest a FX 8300 / 8320E / 8320 or whatever FX 8 core is cheapest in your country. Same CPU as the FX 8350, just different stock cooler and different settings. All are unlocked for overclocking though. So if you get the CPU cooler first, then decide you still need a upgrade you can get a FX 8300 / 8320E / 8320 (whichever cheapest). Total of the CPU cooler + FX 8 core will likely be the same or less than FX 8350 and certainly less than i5 + motherboard. If you get a good cooler you'll be able to overclock very nicely up higher than the stock speed of the FX 8350. Overclocking voids your 3 year warranty though.

If you'd like specific suggestions as to CPU coolers please show me the website you buy from and I'll try and find one that is good for the money and high enough performance to be worth it.
