Display port cable issues
Hi players
Got myslef a new monitor running gsync and it working well.
Its a 1080p 144Hz one. Gsync need to use DP so HDMI is out.
The problem is that the display port cable with it is on the short side.
I want to buy a 3M one but unsure if it can handle the throughput.
Is anyone using DP?
If so what resolution & refresh rate?

If necessary could reduce the refresh rate to 100 Hz but no lower so it can work.

Any useful info appreciated.

Thanks

It so happens that i use a 3m cable on a 144Hz screen, yes. But your whole question is a bit silly. It's probably because you used HDMI before. HDMI is TV technology and should only be used for computers as a last resort. Theres over half a dozen different standards and if you don't have the right standard or a low quality cable all sorts of weird effects can happen.

Pure computer display adapters like VGA, DVI or DP usually don't have those kind of issues. It doesn't matter wether the cable is 1, 5 or 10m long. You may start seeing some signal degredation on really long cables (like 20m+) if you have really good eyes but throughput still wont be a problem.

Just purchase a new Display Port cable, ensuring it's version 1.3 or higher (to have enough bandwidth to support your high refresh rate - recommend 1.4b). Length won't matter, so long it's not like a crazy 10 meters, etc.

HDMI 1.4b can support 120Hz @ 1080p max.

Duel-Link DVI can support 144Hz @ 1080p.

However, DisplayPort 1.4b would support enough bandwidth for 120Hz at 4K.
144Hz @ 1080p would be no sweat. G-SYNC would be happy.

Im using gsync @ 144 Hz and its fine... Fps goes down and back up depending on whats going on in the game. But is smooth and crisp and rarely dips below 99fps in the Division. h1z1 is another story... That game chews up my fps... Sometimes getting down to 35 fps. But still smooth.

G-SYNC will work so long FPS stays above 30 at all times.

H1Z1 isn't the most optimized game in the world...

Bought one. 3M. Works perfectly. I think the monitor & GPU are using display port version 1.2.
Using a MSI GTX 970 Gaming and Acer XB270H monitor.

if you have a display port cable it fits all standards. a display port cable doesn't come with a version cause they are supposed to fit all standards. More likely its a poor cable or yes too long. My 100hz wont work on a 5 metyre cable and researching it I found 3 metres is the recommended max leangth for a display port cable when at 100hz on a 3440 1440 resolution. I am currently waiting for a 3 metre dp cable so am forced to use the 5meter one till it arrives and I'm forced to use 60 Hz only as it doesn't work or works intermittently with 100hz

The Cable fitting has nothing to do with revision. All Cables and Ports have a revision and thus will limit what you can do with those, based around this revision.
