I would go for 1440p these days provided your computer can handle modern games at that resolution.

Unless you are running some kind of air simulator that you need a tri-screen setup 2 monitors is enough.

Well I had 3 monitors in the past but they were not the same size or res but now I have come into some money where I am able to get matching monitors. Then I was able to buy 2 matching 1080p monitors but they are ugly as ♥♥♥♥ next to each other due to the massive bezels. Now I'm able to purchase 3 matching 1080p monitors or 2 dual 1440p monitors. I'm in the process of making a really nice setup and now I'm stuck between these two choices.

If you have the space, I would go with the 3 monitor setup. Gaming across two monitors with the cross hair in the middle isn't very good.

Leaning to the 3 1080p monitors, do you think 4k will soon make 1440p irrelavent? Like will 1440p be shortlived?

1440p has been common for few years now.

4k will be something that will be hard to use on a normal computer monitor unless you have a 30+ inch computer monitor and it will need to be a ways away from where you sit if you want to use it properly.

Using it for tv can be a thing but not for normal computer use.

What graphic card(s) are you using?

Nvidia Surround would, for example, require 3 monitors to expand your gaming across. This is so the center monitor is your center focus point (you can't do a center focus between just two monitors). Hense 3x 1080p resolution monitors would be your better option.

1440p resolution however has 70% more pixel count. If you are happy with gaming on just one monitor and using the other monitor as an accessory display (a monitor which still displays the Windows desktop, can be used for web-browsing, chatting, and other apps open while still ingame on the other).

So it will depend on your graphics card and what you want to do?

I would go for the 2 1440p monitors, i see no reason anyone would need 3 monitors, even for gaming.

What are you wanting to do with your PC?

Having two monitors is good for multitasking, streaming, recording, productivity, etc.

Having 3 monitors is only really good for racing sim setups, where having monitors to the sides will help with immersion.

As long as your computer can handle higher resolutions with acceptable frame rate and visual fidelity, then go for the higher resolution.

You question is tough to answer, as you are debating more monitors with less resolution vs less monitors with more resolution.

In all honesty, you should find out how many monitors you actually need or will use, then decide the resolution/size.

Well I'm waiting for the new Pascal cards to come out and will be getting a high end card. This decision really comes down to resolution. On one hand I'm comfortable with 2 screens and 1440p gives extra screen estate but is 25inches. Then on the other hand 3 1080p monitors are lower res and I get an extra screen for what ever. I always used 1 screen for gaming and the rest for productivity, web browers etc. The 1080p monitors are 24inch. I just don't know!

I've done a U turn im heading more towards the dual monitors. Do you think 25inches is too small for 1440p? 27inches is just way too expensive for 1440p. I wonder how much smaller it will make everything on 25inches.

Rentina display is when the human eye can no longer determine between pixels.
It's a calculation of: Monitor Resolution <> Monitor Size <> Viewing Distance

24 inches monitor with 1080p resolution would become rentina at an optimal viewing distance of 37 inches (3 feet).

Hense 21-24 inch monitor is ideal with 1080p resolution.

When you get to 27-34 inch monitors however, to keep that same retina viewing distance, it's best to go 1440p or 1600p. Understand that's actually 70% more pixels and around 27 inch would be the smallest optimal size to still make good use of those pixels! That would be the same viewing distance of 2-3 feet.

It's not until you go 36 inches+ that you should consider UltraHD 4K, and a single graphics card can't work on that yet, either SLI or Nvidia Pascal (to be released) is required.

Nvidia Pascal would be overkill for 1080p resolution.

You would be best with:

Acer Predator XB271HU
27 inches | 1440p | 4ms response time | 165Hz refresh rate with G-SYNC | IPS Panel

I would highly recommend that over UltraHD 4K and will be blazing fast and smooth for the most hardcore gaming. Well future proofed and scalable. G-SYNC will sync your monitor refresh rate up with as much as the graphic card can dish out. Pricey (it's worth it), so just start off on one. Then when you can afford it get a 2nd (as Accessory), then even a 3rd monitor (then go Nvidia Surround for gaming). The Nvidia Pascal will happily scale up for it. Thin monitor edges, so there's not much gap between the monitors. Total gaming immersion. It's to drool for...

I've been checking out some ultra wide 1440p monitors and damn they look so good! They look so cinematic!

21:9 ratio has really convinced me that ultra wide screens are going to be the future!
Bad 💀 Motha Apr 29, 2016 @ 7:09pm
I would just get 1x Ultra-Wide 21:9 144Hz for your Gaming Screen and then use an extra 1080p display as an extra; for web-browser, etc...
