Set physx to GPU or CPU? (using Nvidia CP)
GPU: gtx980m 8gb
CPU: quad core i7-6700 2.6ghz

What's working best for you?

It doesn't make any sense to set it to CPU; ever.
Even a GTX 960, u can run your games @ 1080p w/ PhysX

The only real instances I've heard of where PhysX=CPU was asked for was Bohemia games; where they state that you should set to that because if on Auto or GPU, it can hinder game performance, which doesn't really seem to be the case, but that is what ask users to do.

It all depends on the hardware.

If using the latest hardware, like the OP, then GPU would be the best... but simply saying that GPU is always the best is incorrect. Auto would more than likely select GPU in this situation.

Well if the hardware is not NVIDIA, there is no such choice.
If NVIDIA then the choice is obvious, the GPU can handle doing PhysX via full GPU acceleration.

If it is a lower-end GPU that can't do games well, then the obvious choice is full disable of in-game PhysX.

Like I said, it is all dependent on the setup. Not everyone has the latest hardware.

Hey everyone if it helps (or whatever), I've been getting like 5-8 extra frames running physx off the gpu. I get about the same performance on the cpu, but the fps drops are far more severe.

Also, temps are about the same as they were on auto, so, yeah.

Well to the OP, your GPU is more than capable of rendering the game and handling PhysX for any games that support it; all via your NVIDIA GPU, so there should not be a need to set PhysX=CPU

Cool. Thanks everyone for responding; I guess what works best depends on your setup.

Set it to the GPU and see for your self.

Yeah, I have it set to GPU--like some said previously, it only matter when physx is present anyway.

Set to GPU to ensure you getting full hardware PhysX whenever actually running a PhysX supported game. Now long ago, some used to say set it to CPU for games like Aram2/3 to avoid issues; but in recent years I've never had an issue when leaving PhysX set to GPU. Nowa days it doesn't seem to have a reason to put on anything else; as it's not used for non-PhysX apps/games.

Now why not "Auto" cause I noticed this is an issue in some PhysX games, where it's not switching to GPU for some reason when NVIDIA-CP is on AUTO. Setting to GPU ensures it's fully using that method.

Agreed.

I used to say auto was just fine, as it would always choose GPU... but this is no longer the case. For the longest time, it would choose GPU, but more and more games keep showing the occasional issue of changing it to use the CPU.

Definitely best to set to GPU and forget, especially with newer titles. If issues arise with older titles, then it is easier to manually switch it to CPU.

Yeah--my specs kind of hint towards using GPU--

NVIDIA GPU = Put it on GPU, done.
It can never perform "better" on CPU

I don't think anyone claimed it to be better, at least in the latest of posts since being necro'd.

I'm just saying many have said in various threads where we discussed PhysX that "Oh leave on Auto is fine" well those folks obviously didn't play around much with PhysX titles then is all I can suggest, cause if it's not actually on "GPU" then often times it just uses "CPU"

So best is whenever you redo your Drivers (or for some reason NVIDIA-CP is back to defaults); ensure that is one of those NVIDIA-CP changes that you make.
