Upgrading my CPU on laptop [Only for those who know]
Hi guys, i have a question on it, and I'm wondering if you could help me. So I got a laptop with a removable CPU (yes it exists), and my current one is a I5-4200M. I know I can put a I7-4702MQ, but I was asking myself if I can put another one from a different socket, bause I heard that the only thing that matters are the first letters of the socket. So mine is a FCPGA946 socket, and I'm interested in one in a FCPGA988 socket. Do you think I could ?

http://ark.intel.com/products/76348/Intel-Core-i5-4200M-Processor-3M-Cache-up-to-3_10-GHz
Sockets Supported FCPGA946
TDP 37 W

pga = pin grid array, aka socket 946

look for a mobile intel 946 cpu that 37w or lower
* or check with the notebook mfg to see what cpus are compatable with it

a pga988 cpu will not fit in a socket not designed for it

If I'm not mistaken, your current one is a 946-pins socket but wanna install a 988-pins model. That doesn't work.

You will need a i7-4710MQ or 4712MQ.

Ok, I made some researches on it too, and it appears that these are the only CPUs I can get. Thanks a lot guys !

PS: BTW, and that's one the reason why I wanna change my CPU, GTA V is using 100% of my CPU all the time (Full HD and graphics on Med to High) but my GPU (GTX 760M) is not fully used as I expect it to be for a game like that. Anything against that ? Of course, I have nothing else running at backgrounf while playing GTA

Oh and thanks to both of you !

Have you set the 760M as dedicated GPU in the NVIDIA Control Panel?

same socket doesnt mean it will work either

if the board and cooling have a 37w max tdp, a higher wattage cpu will throttle sooner resulting in lower speeds while gaming

This is true. 4702MQ is a 37W model. I guess that leaves 4712MQ as the only i7 option left.

Yeah, I've done it, and I know I'm using the GTX. It seems that GTA has a "problem" with medium CPUs, and that's would be the reason why it doesn't use all my GPU

Yeah, of course, and I'd never put in danger my laptop cause I know what are the risks..

the # on Socket is the physical # of Pins. So obviously no, you can't put a different CPU is a different socket; the CPU alone is just a model, but limited to a certain socket. Each socket is physically different.
